Hi BB,
Thanks for your advice.
I actually did go through the link, and it did indeed help me take a decision. I'm not giving it again and applying in the first round !
Going through the profiles made me realize that a 770 will not ensure an interview call as i was assuming.

I've been a latent member of GC for a while now, trying out the tests, testing the iPhone app and GC has again helped me immensely. Thanks a lot.

Yep - as surprising as it sounds. i think some schools got burnt by introverted 750+ scorers who would live in their shells but would not contribute much to the discussions in the class or add value to the program and end up unemployed at the end as they were not aggressive enough. A very high GMAT score may be a red flag to check your leadership skills - you may be a great PhD material with 770 but without a strong personality/leadership potential (purpose of an MBA) that's not a great match for MBA programs.

The only value I see from an ultra high score is that score hungry 3rd tier programs would love to buy your score with rich scholarships.
