In the early twentieth century, an extraordinary painter

I dont think 'are', 'those' & 'are', are incorrect because 'Painting' is singular. can experts please comment on this sentence's options ?

Examples of genres are painting, video, and photography

painter is compared with artist. thats logical.

B is subtle change of meaning -

(B) as varied as are ----> "are" is fatal.

B compares practitioners with painting, video etc which is nonsensical.

A it is.

Same logic i saw in the GMAT PREP 1 test. "countries as varied as China, Russia.."

IMO A.

examples given are of genres. So it has to be 'as varied as'.

Can someone please explain why option C is incorrect ?

I am understanding this as ellipse .. is that a valid reason here ?

Hi, Let me try to explain: Why C is wrong.

one artist .... of genres as varied as those of ...

Refer MGMAT SC Chapter 5, Page 70 Topic This, That These, and Those.

One artist is singular and those is trying to make a plural copy; such construction is not allowed. It is recommended to repeat entire plural noun in such case.
Further in original sentence A) as varied as is describing genres and listing them further and such construction is fine.

In the early twentieth century, an extraordinary painter could influence nearly all advanced artists, but today, for any one artist to influence practitioners of genres as varied as painting, video, and photography is nearly impossible.

(A) as varied as
(B) as varied as are
(C) as varied as those of
(D) that are as varied as your answer
(E) that are as varied as are

Request you not to write your queries/answers/opinions in question window. It prevents ppl from analysing the question. The whole purpose of GMAT Club forum goes wasted by doing so.

Please edit option D I got confused with "your answer " bit.

D and E have ‘that’ incorrectly referring to the practitioners of varied genres. They are out. B compares ‘practitioners’ to ‘painting, video…’C’s construction is off.

A is correct.
