I woke up early to get a good start on SC from GMAT Ultimate Grammar and maybe i woke up too early :) i came across a few problems that i couldnt not explain to myself. If someone could help me with these it would be greately appreciated!

20. Brad wanted to go to fish with his dad, but they had to wait because it was a dreary and
rainy day.
a) wanted to go to fish with his dad, but they had to wait
b) and his dad were wanting to go to fish, but they were waiting
c) were wanting to go fishing, but they had to wait
d) wanted going to fish with his dad, but they were waiting
e) planned on going fishing with his dad, but it needed waiting

can someone help me understand how: Brand were wanting to go fishing....? what is wrog with this sentence: Brad wanted to go to fish with his dad, but they had to wait because it was a dreary and
rainy day

The only juice I could extract from this SC is the last few words "they had to wait". That piece of the puzzle fits in well in the sentence. But the first half is a straight no. I believe answer could be A or C if you rewrite it as -
Brad wanted to go fishing with his dad, but they had to wait.....

Yup I agree. I dont like either of the choices. It can be confusing when you study another language and a bad example can start doubting what is wrong and what is right.

Aside the logic beneath the versions, this is a test of pronoun reference. When you accept that the subject of the second sentence as ‘they’, then you have to have a plural subject for the same, in the form of Brad and his dad, which is there only in B. All other choices lack a plural subject. In E, the singular pronoun 'it' can not logically refer to a human being, Brad.

But even B is not so elegantly written with inappropriate use of progressive tense for events that could be explained better with simple past.
