It's not the end of the world if you can't get into one of the Big 4 firms. Plenty of people are successful in life without Big 4 on their resume.

Just google linkedin and some of the mid size firms. You can see profiles of successful people who worked at mid size firms in the past and found successful career after public accounting

Small firms sometimes pay more and treat you better because they're competing with Big 4. But there's a good reason for that, as you'll see many positions with "Big 4 preferred" and so on -- so they can attract lots of talent quickly. But staying in a Big 4 firm can be tougher than landing the gig -- there's the long hours, the travel, the competitive atmosphere, the "factory" feeling where you're just another interchangeable cog in a huge machine. So at the end of the day, what you make of public accounting experience (Big 4 or not) is more important than having the right sticker on your resume. If you get promoted quickly, impress clients, and get along better at a smaller firm, that will do you much more good than a soulless meatgrinder Big 4 slot....
