I was wondering if you could take a moment to evaluate my future application chances and provide some insight.
I am a current PhD student in the bioengineering department of one of the "M7" schools. I'm considering applying for an MBA after I complete my PhD. I graduated summa cum laude from a top 20 engineering school (3.9 GPA, majoring in both bioengineering and economics) and received my master's degree with a 3.9 GPA. Haven't taken the GMAT yet but I will be studying for it shooting for a 750+. I was on a 2 year fellowship that involved extensive community service and I have also been awarded one of the most prestigious national research fellowships. In terms of extracurriculars, I am also the president of one of the only graduate organizations in my department (organize a range of activities including community service events and professional development seminars for the engineering school).
The real issue/weakness is that I would be applying with no work experience as I went for the PhD right after undergrad. My career objective is to go towards VC/technology acquisition in the biotech/pharma/medical device industries (my research involves several relevant and applicable 'buzzwords' including stem cells and nanotechnology). I plan to use the combination of the PhD and MBA to strengthen my future career (certainly no expectations of jumping straight into a management position with a PhD+MBA and no work experience) and my target schools are HBS, MIT, Columbia. What do you think my chances are and how do you think I could strengthen my application being as I have almost two years before I even begin the process?
The best way for you to strengthen your application would be to work in the direction you want to take your career. If you could do applied research, internship, or a consulting project or something along those lines it would help you.
Best,
Linda
