If a keg of Silvermoon beer is half empty at 5pm on Monday, and two-thirds empty at the beginning of the happy hour, when will it be completely empty?

A. Monday, 7:30 pm
B. Monday, 9 pm
C. Monday, 7 pm
D. Monday, 6:45 pm
E. Monday, 9:30 pm

I'd choose a number which is a multiple of both 2 and 3: we have 1/2 and 2/3 mentioned in the stem.

Say the capacity is 6 liters:
At 5 pm. 3 liters are left.
At 6:30 pm 2 liters are left.

Regular consumption 1 liter in 1.5 hours.
Tripled consumption 3 liters in 1.5 hours, or 3/1.5=2 liters per hour.

At 6:30 pm, when the happy hour starts, 2 liters are left, hence at the rate of 2 liters per hour 1 "happy" hour is needed to empty the keg.

Answer: E.

Hope it helps.

Hi there I got the same conclusion as you - i.e the keg will be empty and the end of the happy hour. But wouldn't the answer be A, at 7:30pm instead of E (2 hours after happy hour)? Thanks.

I am getting different answer with different keg capacity

I choose keg capacity as 12 lit.
so at 5pm - 6lit
at 6:30pm - 4 lit

at the rate of 2lit/hour, keg would get emptied after 2 hours at 8:30PM.

I don't see 8:30PM option. Am I making a wrong calculation?. :think:

Answer: E

If a keg of Silvermoon beer is half empty at 5pm on Monday, and two-thirds empty at the beginning of the happy hour,
1/2 - 3/2 = 1/6

We understand : Every 1.5 Hours, 1/6th quantity is going.
After 6.30 (1/6th + 1/6th) needs to be finished...
Which means a total of 3 HOURS!
So... 6.30PM + 3hours = 9.30 PM MONDAY

Hope its right.

I think the answer is A.

Let's suppose the capacity is 6liters
1/2 of 6= 3
2/3 of 6= 4
(2litres left)
From 5 to 6:30 pm, 4-3=1litres were consumed
1l =1.5hrs
(rate in happy hrs triples)
3l=1.5hrs
2l=?

(2*1.5)/3 =1hr

So 1 hr after 6:30, by 7:30 it will be completed empty
