Score Improvement Strategies [#permalink]

Hi nirajgaire
We would take this post to highlight the gaps that we can avoid and be better equipped for this test.
GMAT is primarily a very "thought & logic" intensive paper. So lets put it across unapologetically that it would take some time to settle down with a logical thought algorithm that will guide you to get quick answers to the GMAT standard questions.
But what is it that assists this process is what we should look at!
We still do not have answers to many questions which we would need to customize this guidance for you. :idk:
However, you can scroll through the next points ,ask yourself if you were prepping the right way and accordingly take the corrective actions.
That said we would also suggest to take a break of a few days and get back on track with a fresh mindset.

So what are the basic questions you need to ask yourself?

1. Was I using ONLY the official resources to prepare?
We would suggest to stick to ONLY OFFICIAL tests and Official practice questions.
You can take a repeat Official Mock with a higher score as target.
Your time is precious and if you are investing on non official material, you need to take a step back and think on this like a 700+ scorer.
No test prep company has a sample size of students taking test that can match the GMAT's sample size.
To believe that you get exactly the right kind of 31 test question that is tested on GMAT by any test prep company is not a practical thought.
So, use only OFFICIAL Questions for practice and Tests and invest time more judiciously!

2. Was I using the OG the right way?
How do we do this part right? Does completing the OG guarantees a 700+? Not really! :?
It is essential that we invest quality time in logically analyzing the errors committed, log them in a learning tracker because on GMAT there is always a pattern. Unless we know of that pattern or the bucket that is most filled with our errors ,we cannot close them! :idk:
So what kind of error buckets would show a pattern?
 Focus Gaps-Repeated mistakes when you are missing the context, overlooking critical data or simply "assuming" data without a logical backup.
:idea:Concept Gaps-You simply miss it because you do not know it now. You shall observe a pattern on having similar errors across those topics located with concept gaps. The solution is to fix these errors asap!

:idea:Application Gap-You struggle to break down the question stem, use strategies like elimination, substitution, etc and get to the right answer in under 2min.

Once we know whats the issue,we can take the steps to close them and hence maintaining a error log or learning tracker is mandatory in this journey.

3.Was I practicing with a timer and was able to smash the Easy and Intermediate question in under 60 sec and 1min 30 sec respectively?
To have a good score of 700+, it is important that you not only get these questions correct in both Verbal and Quant but you also get them correct like a Marvel Superhero :upsidedown - Meaning with absolute accuracy, jet speed and with complete confidence. You have to up your skills to smash them in under 1min 30 sec(Intermediate) and 60 seconds(Easy). So focus on accuracy and time on these questions.
Your Verbal and Quant score reflects Conceptual Gaps that need to be located and closed immediately to breach the Q46 and V30 level.
Once that is achieved, you can work on the application gaps and build on the score.

Have you been CONFIDENT on your responses?
Do not overthink once you have made the plunge and attempted the question.
Correct or incorrect, that will only affect your psyche and prevent you from being the best version of YOU!
We know, its easier said than done but these differentiators are what sets a 700+ scorer apart from the many

Think about it this way,if you have an experimental question that doesnt seem very difficult to you,you may doubt your performance and your low confidence will affect the others and this time the investment of focus is really a nasty one because there are NO returns on this.
You would lose focus and for literally no reason. You are psychogically tricked! :dazed
Indeed, our super powerful brain has an extra ordinary quality. It works best when it works against us! :)
Self doubts, overthinking, low confidence,...and the list would go on!
So learn CONTROLLING your thoughts and make the powerful organ work in your favour. :)

Have you been watching the solutions of incorrect attempts immediately instead of spending quality time with the question?
If the answer is YES,then its one of the biggest gaps you need to close immediately. Thought algorithm takes time to develop but if we get dependent on the solutions the minute we make a mistake, believe us,this practice will make you feel STUCK when you encounter a different question from the same topic. You will find your thinking blocked while you look at the screen and the whiteboard!
Practice and when you know you are wrong-PAUSE- and spend time with the question.
Ask yourself how do i get to the right answer?
What am I missing?
Which options can i eliminate?
How do i simplify the question stem or how do i breakdown this passage?

We are listing here two of our posts to show you how you can think(from Quant & Verbal)
Quant- https://gmatclub.com/forum/if-m-and-n-a ... l#p2951067
Verbal- https://gmatclub.com/forum/recent-femin ... l#p2963021

Have you taken enough tests to assess yourself and close the gaps?
Ask yourself again on have you taken the official tests or assessed yourself through unofficial tests? If the answer is in favour of official tests then ask again if you did analyze the errors, closed the gaps dilligently by practicing more through and through.

Have you always been able to maintain FOCUS in the questions?
You have to be in it to WIN it !
You have to stay in the moment, focus intensively on the question stub,on the data,on the options,on the rooms of all logical perspectives and remember, on the GMAT,most of the time its not about actually solving it but recognizing the RIGHT answer choice.
Poor focus can heavily drop down our scores and leave us disappointed with ourselves because you know you could have avoided that mistake.

Now with all of these we are dropping a few links that can push you to get to a score that you know you are capable of!!
These people are no different from YOU.

You just need to approach the test with a fresh new perspective that is GMAT centric :)

Just prepare it in a technical and RIGHT way.

See you on the other side of the green

Hi nirajgaire,
Your quant score seems great, and you need to focus on verbal. Explore the free SC and CR solution to OG problems from the link;

Hi nirajgaire,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What specific study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi!,
If anybody can help me.
I gave GMAT today and got the score of 500 with following details:
Q 44- (47 percentile)
V 17- (14 percentile)
Total 500- 24 percentile
Can anyone guide me how to improve the score? I used Jamboree as my test prep.
Any strategy would be a great help.

Hi nirajgaire,

It's unfortunate that your GMAT exam didn't go as planned. But there is clearly scope for improvement. Before getting into details, do provide some context about

1. The time you are able to devote to studying each day
2. The structure and study plan you followed Resources you used for prep
3. Your target score
4. Your target month

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. And I personally suggest to go for the retake only after you prepared well and are 100% confident.

Having said that, I would like to have a one-on-one conversation with you. The discussion would be mostly around the answers to the above questions, the approximate time you have for the next attempt and the plan of action. If you have an ESR with you, that will be even more helpful to get the insights about your performance. You use use the link below to schedule a call with me.
