You may have heard that the Stanford MSx Program has one of the most challenging business school applications around. The Stanford MSx Program uses the same application associated with Stanford’s full-time MBA program. What makes the application so challenging? Many components.
The Stanford MSX Program application asks the typical goals essay question, prompting you to elaborate on “why Stanford.” But beyond this, it asks many other challenging questions geared to understanding if you have the entrepreneurial, innovative, and pioneering mindset that Stanford values greatly.
Open-ended “What Matters Most to You” essay. Writing admissions essays is hard enough when writing to a very defined question. When candidates are asked open-ended questions, as in the Stanford MSx Program application, the task is all that much harder. You need to think deeply about what matters most to you and be able to tell stories that help the admissions committee understand your passion and how it has manifested in your life. This sort of open-ended prompt often takes many more re-writes than an essay with a much more targeted question.
Three Impact essays. The Stanford MSx Program application gives candidates the opportunity to write three optional short impact essays (approximately 200 words each). Should a candidate write them? Absolutely! Stanford is all about impact and innovation and equipping pioneers. This is a great opportunity to show you have already made an impact in various ways – professional, community, personal, or academic. You have to give great thought to what topics are most value-added, and the brevity of the essays means you have to work hard to say a lot in a little space. Don’t waste your words!
Background essay. The Stanford MSx Program application gives candidates the opportunity to write a short personal background essay. By the time most candidates turn their attention to this, they are exhausted from all the other writing! But, if you are able, also use that essay as an opportunity to provide value-added information that continues to give great depth to your candidacy. The school wants to create a diverse cohort, and the background information you give here may help define you as a winning candidate.
“Greatest accomplishments” in the job description section. The Stanford MSx Program application has a much more complex job description section than one typically sees at the top MBA and EMBA programs. Of all the information requested in the job description section, one of the most important prompts asks that you identify your greatest accomplishment in your job. This is your opportunity to shine a light on your skills and achievements, so use it well!
