Studies have shown that people who keep daily diet records are far more successful at losing weight than people who don’t keep track of what they eat. Researchers believe that many weight-loss efforts fail because people eat more calories than they intend to consume. One study followed a group of patients who reported that they could not lose weight when consuming only 1,200 calories a day. The study found that the group consumed, on average, 47% more than it claimed and exercised 51% less. In contrast, when dieters record what they eat, their actual consumption more closely matches their reported consumption.

The two boldface portions in the argument above are best described by which of the following statements?

(A.) The first is a conclusion reached by researchers; the second is evidence that that conclusion is correct.
(B) The first is an explanation of why a certain theory is thought to be true; the second is an example of research results that support this theory.
(C) The first is an example illustrating the truth of a certain theory; the second is a competing theory.
(D) The first is a premise upon which the researchers base their opinion; the second illustrates that their opinion is correct.
(E) The first introduces a theory that the researchers have disproved; the second is the basis for the researchers’ argument.

C. The first is an example illustrating the truth of a certain theory; the second is a competing theory.
D. The first is a premise upon which the researchers base their opinion; the second illustrates that their opinion is correct.
E. The first introduces a theory that the researchers have disproved; the second is the basis for the researchers’ argument.

The paragraph starts with the reference to studies that point to the same conclusion. Then it discusses a particular study that is in line with the studies that are mentioned in the beginning.

A - the first is not a conclusion reached by the researchers. Even if it is, the second is not the evidence. Second is the result of a different independent study.

D - is the right choice. First is a premise that the researchers start with. Then the second is the result that proves that their opinion is correct.

IMO D since the first part is a premise and the 2nd part is an illustration to support it.

"D" for me. in A- the first bold statement is not the "conclusion" if the the second is considered "evidence" for the same.

D. IMO stmnt 1 is a fact and not a conclusion

+ing - I read that sentences containing phrases such as"results show, study show" are premises. Can someone confirm the same

I get A. For A the first part is a conclusion but the second is that conclusion's evidence. B is wrong because the first is the theory instead of an explanation of why it is true. C is wrong because the second is not a competing theory at all. D’s first part is not a premise but a claim or a conclusion instead. It’s second part shows that the opinion maybe correct. E is wrong because the first is what the researchers prove- not disprove.

In the stimulus mentioned, the conclusion is - Researchers believe that many weight-loss efforts fail because people eat more calories than they intend to consume.

How did the researcher conclude this – because studies have shown that people who record what they eat are more successful in loosing weight then people who do not keep track of their diet. So the first should have been a premise leading to the conclusion.

Most likely D may be the ans.

Here is how I eliminated my other choices.

Option A is ruled out because the first BF is NOT a conclusion.

The first BF provides some information based on the study result. It does NOT explain why a theory is thought to be correct. So rule out B.

If you look at the second BF, it is provides one the reasons that researchers found to prove what they are concluding. (Their conclusion is many weight loss efforts fail – one of the reasons is that they do no report the information correctly. This is infact supporting the conclusion) – (Competing – means opposing. Obviously this is NOT the case. Hence rule out option C.

Obviously first BF is not introducing any theory. It just states some facts. So rule out E.

My appologies.....in case my explanations do not make any sense.....

IMO D. The first boldface is premise, leading to the conclusion.
The second boldface is evidence to support the conclusion.

IMO:D

The first boldface statement is the premise on which researchers base their opinion which is there in the second line of the question ("Researchers believe that many weight-loss efforts fail because people eat more calories than they intend to consume")

The second boldface clearly supports this opinion.

Between A & D, I am with D.

Reason: The first bold-face is not the conclusion. The conclusion shold be, "...many weight-loss efforts fail because people eat more calories than they intend to consume". The first bold-face is just another premise, the 2nd one is the evidence that goes along with it.
