Unlike the invasions of the Italian peninsula by sea, as had been done by all previous aggressors, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps to invade by land from the north.

A) Unlike the invasions of the Italian peninsula by sea, as had been done by all previous aggressors, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps to invade -> "the invasions" is compared with "Hannibal"; it is incorrect

B) Unlike all previous aggressors, who invaded the Italian peninsula by sea, Hannibal had chosen to travel over the Alps, invading -> "had chosen" means Hannibal was first, but it is not the intended meaning. Incorrect.

C) Compared to all previous aggressors, who had invaded the Italian peninsula by sea, the choice of Hannibal was to travel over the Alps to invade -> "all previous aggressors" are compared with "the choice of Hannibal". Incorrect.

D) Rather than invade the Italian peninsula by sea, as all previous aggressors had done, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps to invade -> It is better. Let's keep it.

E) Instead of all previous aggressors’ sea invasions of the Italian peninsula, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps, invading -> all previous aggressors’ is compared with Hannibal, it is incorrect.

So, I think D. :)

(A) Incorrectly compares previous invasions to Hanibal.

(B) Hanibal had chosen is incorrect, since it's a past perfect it must've happened before some other event (other aggressors' invasions) but it doesn't make sense.

(C) Incorrectly compares previous aggressors to choice of Hanibal.

(D) Perfect!!

(E) Instead of is wrong usage. Also incorrectly compares sea invasions to Hanibal's choice.

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC1)

A) Unlike the invasions of the Italian peninsula by sea, as had been done by all previous aggressors, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps to invade
Wrong comparison between invasions and hanibal therefore out

B) Unlike all previous aggressors, who invaded the Italian peninsula by sea, Hannibal had chosen to travel over the Alps, invading
THe usage of past perfect tense is unwarranted therefore out

C) Compared to all previous aggressors, who had invaded the Italian peninsula by sea, the choice of Hannibal was to travel over the Alps to invade
Previous aggressors are compared to the choice of hanibal wrong meaning therefore out

D) Rather than invade the Italian peninsula by sea, as all previous aggressors had done, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps to invade
THe meaning , tense and comparison is perfect therefore let us hang on to it

E) Instead of all previous aggressors’ sea invasions of the Italian peninsula, Hannibal chose to travel over the Alps, invading
'instead' doesn't make any sense at all therefore out
