I have been generally tutoring 2-3 person only in a month to ensure that necessary attention and due diligence can be paid to each and we work towards achieving our aim.
So when someone from our forum approached me to help him out to reach 49-50 from 44-45 in quant with just four days left for his exam, I was having second thoughts. But then he insisted and we planned for around 8-10 hrs via skype in these 3-4 days to achieve this.
We did manage to hit 49 on third day in a gmat prep test from a fresh exam pack, although he finally landed with 48 in quant in actuals today.
I want to share two things with you all..
1) if you are decent in your concepts, you can increase your score with a bit of guidance that could be from a friend, a tutor or an institute.
2) STRATEGY:- this is the main point I wanted to share.
we generally ask tutors to tells us theory and then some questions on that topic are discussed. However here Aditya just wanted an hour each on two topics - inequality and number properties, and then wanted to spend remaining 6-7 hours to solve around 150-160 fresh question, which he had gathered.
so we sat and went through these questions one by one. He initially tried to solve a question in a minute or so, after which I gave him my mind on that question.
this actually worked for him and he was able to move up from 44-45 to 49.
Three things happen here
a) Your confidence increases in the tutor you have chosen if he can answer your questions continuously, so in a way it is the test of the tutor's credibility too.
b) You are able to touch upon all topics and can learn tricks and strategies in almost all topics. So if there is a question on remainders, the tutor can not only solve that question for you but also talk of cyclicity and expanded form for finding remainders and also touch few strategies on factorials and number properties which are part of few questions on remainders
c) More importantly you are able to put yourself in tutor's mind as to what are his first thoughts and solution to a question which you otherwise would solve in a different manner. Any one would surely find the best solution if given 10 minutes but it is what should come to your mind at the first sight of the question that is important. Our own Bunuel for that matter is one I have seen who finds a fault in a solution or a question at the very first look.
It did help Aditya, try it with your tutors, may be of some help to you too. Ofcourse it is important that you have your concepts slightly clear before you try this and you may just choose 20-30 questions in an hour for this.
All the best for your prep!
Hi
chetan2uThanks for sharing this. Can you please share a strategy for Improving from
Q49 to Q50 and Q50 to Q51 with 2 Months remaining from the main Exam. Which is more relatively easier to achieve. Looking forward to your reply.
Rahul,
To achieve a high score, you can do it yourself too if time is on your side and here you have 2 months with you already at 49-50.
so you require to analyse your mistakes.
1) If you find you could solve each one of them when you tried them again or when you see your mistakes and the words " Oh man, how can I do such a silly mistake" are on your lips. You just require to be more careful and you are already there at 51 but for lack of attention.
2) If you find you are struggling with the question even the second time and solution was almost a bouncer, you require to choose these topics and work upon them. You don't require to invest time and money in a tutor or a prep company at this level. If you could come till 49-50, you could easily move 1 point higher if you analyze your mistakes properly..
If you are at 49-50 and have two months more, looking forward for a 99%.
All the best
