Re: At a certain company, 30 percent of the employees live in City R. If 2 [#permalink]

At a certain company, 30 percent of the employees live in City R. If 25 percent of the company’s employees live in apartments in City R, what is the number of the employees who live in apartments in City R ?

(1) Of the employees who live in City R, 6 do not live in apartments.
(2) Of the employees, 84 do not live in City R.

PS21244

Let the no. of employees be x.
Given: No. of employees who live in in City R = 30% of x.
=> No. of employees who live in apartments in City R = 25% of 30% of x = 3x/40.

Statement 1: Of the employees who live in City R, 6 do not live in apartments.
This statement => 75% of 30%of x do not live in apartments.
=> 9x/40 = 6
=> x = 80/3.

Thus we can calculate the value of 3x/40, which is actually asked in the question => 2.

Thus Sufficient.

Statement 2: Of the employees, 84 do not live in City R.
Now the employees who do not live in City R = 70% of x = 84.
=> x =120.
=> 3x/40 = 9.

Thus Sufficient.

Answer D.

your way of calculating x from statement 1 is wrong.
