Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

(A) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

(B) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash, many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced.

(C) Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single components of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried to recycle to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal. - awkward

(E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single component of municipal trash, so many municipalities have tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal could be reduced. - awkward

do we need a present perfect 'have tried' here?

Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

(A) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
Didn't see any problem with it, hold it still.

(B) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash, many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced.
the word "in" as a preposition here is NOT idiomatic.
and I think the ''is'' in "cost of trash disposal is reduced" should be ''will be''
and ''so that'' sounds redudant here.

(C) Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single components of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried to recycle to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
Simple gramatical error.

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
The subject should be "paper", not "all kinds"
''and so'' is redundant and incorrect here.

(E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single component of municipal trash, so many municipalities have tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal could be reduced.
Same reason as the last one, plus the incosistent usage of "kinds" and "is" and ''have'' and ''coule be''

My choice is A

For those of you who questioned the authenticity of the answer - this question is from GMAT's Paper based Test and the official answer is A.

Paper of all kinds is singular. since of is a middleman as given in manhattan Gmat prep

It is similar to "the building of tall skyscrappers is" not are

This is pretty much the same reasoning i used to choose A

I chose A. Considered C... but it reads "paper...are" which makes no sense. 'of all kinds' could be removed, and the subject and verb should agree.

Also, 'tried to recycle' does not have the exact meaning as 'tried recycling'--- at least IMO.
*tried to recycle suggests: attempted to recycle
*tried recycling suggests: turned to recycling (as a method).

Not sure if this makes sense, but that was my reasoning.

(A) Because [paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash], [many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal].

Because [x], [y]

[x] has subject-verb and [y] has sub-verb

(B) Because [paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash], [many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced.]
[y] -> No subject : What did they recycle ?

(C) Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single components of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried to recycle to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
[y] -> No subject : What did they recycle ?[/color]

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.
All kinds of paper --> Wrong idiom here --> It should be "Paper of all kinds"
Cause-Effect not expressed correctly
(E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single component of municipal trash, so many municipalities have tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal could be reduced.
All kinds of paper --> Wrong idiom here --> It should be "Paper of all kinds"
Cause-Effect not expressed correctly

There is a cause-effect relationship between
"paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash" - Cause
and
"many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal" - Effect

So the best way if Cause leads to effect in active voice
Go with A - explanations inline.

Let me know if the explanations do not make sense.

D and E are eliminated because the subject is "paper" and NOT "the kind".

C "paper of all kinds are" incorrect because paper -singular and we need IS not ARE.

B i eliminated B because only in one of five answer choices we see "component in", so i diceded that this is incorrect one. Because if this is correct it would be very strange.

So i stayed with A

My take:

A - Correct: "paper of all kinds IS" used the right verb, second clause is concise.
B - Same right verb use but second clause is unnecessarily wordy.
C - "paper of all kinds ARE" is incorrect
D - "All kinds of paper ARE" is correct but "and so" is unidiomatic
E - "All kinds of paper IS" is incorrect

Does 'Single components" correct expression? I think No.

(A) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal. --- Best choice.

(B) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash, many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced. -- Correct Sv pair, 'component in' is wrong. Also using past tense changed the meaning of it.

(C) Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single components in municipal trash, many municipalities have tried to recycle to reduce the cost of trash disposal. --- Sv problem, paper with 'are'

(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal. --- Correct SV pair. 'and so' feeling off now.

(E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single component of municipal trash, so many municipalities have tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal could be reduced. --- Sv problem, kinds with 'is'
