I know it's very hard to take this advice, but relax. :) I don't think I got my SS interview until January.

Still wishing everyone luck!

Thanks for the advice, Kry. I am going to relax on the tennis court during lunch today and vent out all my nervous energy on my colleague!. Will probably feel good if I serve him a bagel :-)

Alright, this is a letter our new Dean (Richard Lyons) sent to us. I've taken out the details, but just kept the title and my summary of it for those of you interested in what Haas' short term and long term plans are.

1) Faculty Hiring: Haas is currently actively recruiting 11 tenure-track faculty members, one of the largest in our history.
2) Capital Campaign: We are trying to raise $300 million by 2010. 1/3 has already been completed in the past 3 years.
3) Campaign and Strategy Working Group: A new strategic plan will be out by May.
4) Space Issues: A potential separate office in Downtown Berkeley for executive programs, renovations of the current building in 2009-10, and a potential new building in 3-5 years next to the current facility. No word on whether we would expand class size or not.

Thanks for the info. I guess he is really serious about his promise to make Haas a top 5 program in the near future. However, is it plausible to reach his $300 million goal now? Especially in this economy, the donations will dry up. I wonder if this continuous expansion can seriously cause a setback later on. afterall, Berkeley is still a public institution.

Hi ninkorn,

great questions. I did leave out a part where he mentions that the situation will be tough to raise the money in this condition, but I think the thing is, Haas' historic contribution % and amount has been quite low compared to many other top 10 schools, so even with the bad economy, our special efforts would have more impact and probably raise more money than other schools. Meaning, because we're starting from a very low bar and didn't put in as much effort in the past, now that we're doing a lot more trying to get contributions, we should still be able to eek out some $$. :) Hope that was clear?

not sure what you mean by "continuous expansion... cause a setback later on". Berkeley is a public institution, but last year the UC system approved that the professional schools of Berkeley and UCLA can do fund raising on their own and separate its budgets from the UC system. That's why the tuition is going up to match other public schools like Michigan/Darden, this new fund raising campaign, and the ability to use our money the way we want to.

Right now one of the main issues at Haas is that we don't have enough space (our undergrad program does take up a lot of our public space) and that eventually we may want to expand our class size (maybe to the "small school standard" of 360, who knows, it's just my speculation). So investing in professors, buildings, and renovations is something that won't really hurt us in the future.

Hey ninkorn! Glad to hear you're still giving Haas a chance :P

don't fret, they only started sending out invites this week, and with the super small admissions committee (4 readers) reading close to 1000 apps, it may take some time to get the interview invite out. Like I said a few posts earlier, I didn't get my interview till end of December/Early January time frame.
