Quote:
I was checking out Admissions411's Class of 2011 statistics. 1 person (out of 25) reported that he/she received an interview. Not sure how reliable that is, but just want to throw it out there.

It does seem a little early for interview invites, though not unreasonable at least according to the admissions director's blog: "Although there is no fixed percentage of the pool that we interview, we typically invite 25-30% of our applicants to interview. An interview invitation could be sent as early as four weeks after the application deadline or as late as a few days before the response date. Timing of the invitation is not significant."

It will be 4 weeks this Tuesday, so if she did receive one, it must have been one of the earliest sent out, so not completely unreasonable. The Haas waiting game begins!

garun77 & trucker -

Same boat as you guys are. I was informed that the attsted copy of the degree certificate would be required in case you are invited to interview. So till then its peace.

kryzak -

Great to know about the coffee chats. Any idea on one such event happening in India?

BTW, the admissions commitee representative who contacted me was extremely prompt in replying. They had asked for few missing details in my applications and I had exchanged few e-mails. But frankly, the response compared to other schools is great !

to Ivy: I'm not sure if there will be one for India. Hopefully one of our numerous Indian classmates will be back there and hosting one this winter! On the same note, I hope everyone is ok after the recent Mumbai attacks. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the region.

As for interview invites, I've heard through the grapevine that NO interviews have been sent out yet, and the earliest one should come in the next week or so. The one reported on Admissions411 (and BW) is most likely a troll. Just to quell some rumors out there. :)

BTW, if any of you do get an interview, please shout out here (not that I wouldn't expect you to :P)! I'd love to meet up with some of you if you are doing on-campus or Super Saturday interviews. :)

Kryzak- Thanks for the revert. Well it was indeed a black day for the India. Although work in mumbai has resumed as usual, the impact is still there and people have not gotten over the shock. I had calls with my clients yesterday and they said it will still take few days for business to be back to normal.

BTW, not fully confirmed yet, but there will be coffee chats in Mumbai, New Dehli, and Bangalore this winter with Haas.

Not sure who they're sending the invites out to, probably only people who have submitted an application or created a login on the website. But if anyone gets the email, please post it here for the benefit of everyone else!

Thanks!

Kryzak,

Very heartening to see Berkeley's "Candlelight Vigil" reaction to the Mumbai incident. One of my relatives in Mumbai was two blocks away from the crossfire when it all started. Also counting Wharton's email, I am moved by b-schools' thoughtful reactions to this tragic incident.

Yes, one of the best things about b-school is the international diversity represented by the students. Working together across all political borders, cultural differences, and stereotypes, that's what's b-school is all about. One thing I saw while I was at the candlelight vigil that I thought was very nice is an Indian student helping a Pakistani student light his candle multiple times when the wind blew it out. I thought that "non-event" was pretty symbolic of our unity.

Anyone else went on campus tour?

I am currently in west coast on work related assignment decided to drop by Berkeley campus for tour yesterday.

Oh man is this in a really crappy neighborhood? I was driving in a BMW rental and I was afraid of parking on the street near the campus!!!!!!!

Campus is mixed. Anywhere near Telegraph (south side) is pretty bad. The close you get to Oakland, generally the worse it gets.

North side of campus is much better and cleaner. It is also the science/engineering side of campus, so it gets a bit more geeky when you get to that side. Haas is near the football stadium, in between North and South side.

I don't think any part of Berkeley is "dangerous". It's like any other city, don't leave your GPS on your windshield or a laptop bag in the seat. That's about it.

Yes I should correct myself. By "pretty bad" I mean dirty streets, and harmless homeless people yelling at you. Homeless people are pretty aggressive on Telegraph. But will physically leave you alone.

I lived there for two years. If I moved back to Berkeley I would probably live on northside or near College-Ashby. I'm getting old and yuppie :-D .

Homeless? harmless?

This past August I went to Wharton Campus tour and the news that week was that 2 homeless women fought over a homeless guy at Love Park in Center City and one woman stabbed the other with a kitchen knife....

https://www.kyw1060.com/pages/2733194.php?

It was the talk of the town!!! Then I saw Wharton neighborhood and saw Bronx-like characteristics and knocked Wharton off my list of applications.....

The Berkeley homeless are pretty harmless. I haven't really heard of too much happening...

Berkeley isn't Philladelphia. Parts of Oakland are probably comparable to Philadelphia. But Berkeley isn't too bad. Berkeley itself is a VERY tolerant, and let live type of city. So they don't really do anything about the homeless unless they do something illegal.

Coffee chat invite just came!

Indeed, it sounds like you need a login to register for this event. Also, here are the hosting cities listed in the invite:

In the United States:
Austin, TX
Berkeley, CA
Dallas, TX
Los Angeles, CA
New York, NY
Orlando, FL
Philadelphia, PA
Phoenix, AZ
Salt Lake City, UT
San Francisco, CA
Washington, DC

Internationally:
Bangalore, India
Calgary, Canada
Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan
London, UK
Madrid, Spain
Monterrey, N.L., Mexico
Mumbai, India
New Delhi, India
Paris, France
Singapore, Singapore
Taipei, Taiwan
Tel Aviv, Israel
Toronto, Canada
Turin (Torino), Italy

I just signed up for the Berkeley one. But damn, why couldn't it be an interview invite instead...

Just got the chat invite. Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: you beat me to it! I wish it was an interview invite too. Combined with the Chicago monthly newsletter, it's been a rough day for email!

kryzak wrote:
the purpose of the chats is to give students who are applying to Haas this year (whether you've submitted your application or not) to meet more students and alums more conveniently. Think of it as an informal outreach and a great opportunity for you to see what students are like at Haas without traveling all the way to California. :)

There is NO correlation between these coffee chat invites and admission interview invites, unfortunately.
