Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument above?

(A) A major cigarette manufacturer will soon introduce a new type of cigarette pack that contains fewer cigarettes than its other types of packs. (Irrelevant.)

(B) Cigarette smoking is gaining in popularity compared to cigar smoking, which is also known to cause lung cancer. (Irrelevant, no one is talking about whether the popularity of cigarette smoking has increased or cigar smoking has.)

(C) People rarely develop lung cancer within a few years after they begin smoking cigarettes. (irrelevant, we are not talking about how many years does it take for lung cancer to be caused once someone starts smoking cigarettes)

(D) The nation that leads the world in exporting tobacco used in cigarettes is expected to place limits on the amount of tobacco it exports. (Irrelevant, the stimulus isn't talking about from where cigarette tobacco is sourced etc.)

(E) An increasing number of people are developing lung cancer as a result of causes other than cigarette smoking. (This is our OA, as it clearly states that the smoking cigarettes isn't the only cause of lung cancer and even if the number of people smoking cigarette has come down doesn't mean the number of people being afflicted by lung cancer will also reduce.)

Do remember, smoking is injurious to health ;)

Cigarette smoking, which is widely accepted to be the leading cause of lung cancer, is less popular today than ever before. Therefore, we can expect the incidence of lung cancer to decline in the future.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The correct answer is (E).

This argument relies on the general assumption that all other factors in the incidence of lung cancer will remain unchanged in the near future. Choice (E) provides information that, if true, directly refutes this assumption.
