Gmat preparation : Just 1 month of time

Hi,

I am planning to give my GMAT in a month. I have prepared for CAT earlier and so my concepts of quant are decent. I had given a practice GMAT test and scored a 50 in quant and 22 in verbal. I need to improve my verbal skills.
How do I begin my preparation for verbal.
Is it possible to improve it in such short time.
And when is the appropriate time to book a date.

For verbal, you can start by reading concepts from Manhattan books. Those should give you a fair enough idea of what is tested on GMAT.
Start giving tests on regular basis. You will see the improvement post that.
SC is an area where people find it easy to improve score. You can follow MGMAT SC or SC bible.

A good time to book the date will be when you start scoring in +- 50 range of your desired score. Book the date according to how much preparation is left, within time frame of 1 month.

okay, Thanks gmatsheeba. But i see these books are pretty costly.
What about GMAT official guide. I had read in other posts that doing it over and over again helps. Does it ?
Also, because i have very little time should i go with princeton tests or manhattan tests ? which one is more close to the actual gmat ?

Yes ofcourse OG is a great resource. It provides you with official questions and those are the only things you can vouch to when you prepare.
Solving OG is almost the crux of a decent GMAT preparation.

Manhattan tests give you a good idea of the real GMAT. You can find a detailed analysis of different test packages in Self Prep -> All the GMAT tests on the gmatclub site.

As far as repeating questions is concerned, try to maintain an error log for whatever you do, so that you can revise your mistakes at a later point of time.

Also, MGMAT tests come free with any of their books.
The chepest way to buy would be to get the Kindle edition of any MGMAT book and get those tests free :)

Hello shadowfax66,

what is your target GMAT score? if you are looking to improve verbal score by more than 10 points , it will take you more than a month.
It took me much more than that , years honestly , to reach V 34. But I was so happy the day I scored 700. It is a great feeling.

theory books ! theory books is what you need.
For my last attempt , I had stopped taking tests for a couple of months and created a strategy for each type of question.
There are many books out there for theory and it will take you good amount of time.
In my observation good theory books have minimal practice questions. I think thats a good sign if you are looking for theory books.

what helped me
SC - Manhattan SC
CR - Powerscore CR bible
RC - novels

a month for theory books and then a couple for practice. Dont ignore math please.....
i really dont think there is a shortcut for gmat prep

Download gmatclub verbal book its free and very detailed....By this you'll be through with SC, you may just buy one book for CR or search for the theory in the forums lots of information is there...

Regrading RC practice and build stamina.

With the strong imbalance in your quant/verbal scores - you should definitely change the way you are thinking for verbal. If you really dedicate an entire month of hardcore effort to verbal - you can definitely make it. We've seen it done before. Whatever you are doing now - don't keep doing it. You need to learn a new method.
