Sounds like a great profile! You have good scores (GPA + GMAT) that will instantly make you a compelling candidate even coming from a competitive demographic.

A key thing for you will be making sure you explain the transitions from college to your current role. It's not common for MBA applicants at your age to have had 3 jobs, though by no means is it a negative. Your profile just requires more explaining.

Do you have any extracurricular activities from college or since college that you can tout? That is going to be very important to rounding out your profile.

As for your career goal, product management at big tech is great and fitting for Haas, but you are going to want a special angle otherwise your application will fall flat. What about a long-term career goal? Is that it? If so, you need to dream bigger. If not, what are you planning to do in 5-10 years or even longer than that?

Hi ali_parkar,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good, and a solid GMAT score is clearly exhibiting your academic potential. About your work experience, I can see a good career trajectory. You should explain how you perform better than your peers. Also, You have worked in different roles, and if you can showcase this as your strength in your post-MBA goals (by making them more specific and inspired by previous experiences). Haas is a perfect choice for product management, but you may need to discuss your ambitions in greater depth, split them down into short-term and long-term goals, and share your vision with the adcoms. Make a point of emphasizing how an MBA from Haas can assist you in filling gaps in your profile and achieving your goals. Your ECs are missing, try to add some. It will bring diversity to your profile and set you apart from other applicants. You may want to read the article on the Role of ECs in your MBA application and how you can improve this part.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall your profile is good. What matters is connecting the dots and explaining your profile impactfully. I would like to know some major aspects of your work profile. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Hello ali_parkar,

Thank you for your post. You have an impressive GMAT and strong work/leadership experience. Since you are coming from a competitive set of applicants, you will want to figure out how to differentiate yourself in the applicant pool. Part of this will be applying to a broad range of programs. Where else do you anticipate applying to along with Haas? Keeping in mind your post-MBA goal of product management, you may want to look at Wharton, CBS, Ross, HBS, and Kellogg as well if you are open to exploring additional U.S. programs.

You will also want to articulate a more specific post-MBA goal. Since a lot of MBA hopefuls are interested in these big tech companies, you want to share how you will make your unique mark.

Another way you will want to differentiate yourself is through your personal story. Crafting a strong story here is part of our comprehensive services and one of the areas that Personal MBA Coach’s clients often need the most help with.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com for a more extensive evaluation. Personal MBA Coach works with applicants from around the world, and many Indian applicants. We would love to further discuss your profile and ways to enhance your candidacy!

Hi vishnusnow

Your undergraduate GPA seems unusually low. Can you confirm how you converted it to a 4.0 scale (if it was not already on that scale)?

Hi ggiovanelli,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with the stats, your undergrad GPA is good. The average GMAT score required for Haas is 725, while yours is quite lower. I recommend that you strive to increase your GMAT score and aim for a score of 720 or above to boost your chances. On the work front, I see elements of leadership in your profile that, if emphasized in your essays, can help you stand out. There is also an indication of career progression in your work, which is great. Your extracurricular activities are pretty interesting and highlight other aspects of your personality, which is wonderful. Tae Kwon Do and traveling, in particular, would assist you in adding diversity to your application.

Overall, your profile is good. However, in order to maximize your chances at Haas, I would advise you to strive to improve your GMAT score. What matters most is how you connect the dots and create a compelling narrative. What’s going to matter most is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to Haas. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to enhance your application and maximize your chances for fall intake

Cheers!

You stand a good chance! Scores, GPA and experience looks about right for Haas.

You might want to jazz up your career goal a little bit. You have appropriate ST/LT goals but want to make sure you're determining what type of impact you can have in those roles.

I didn't see any ECs. Can you share any? That's the major missing component.

I'm asking for an eval for a traditional MBA (2 yr) degree at Haas:

Background and nationality - Indian
Undergrad Information - Econ Major from St Xavier's College, Mumbai University; CGPA - 3.45
GMAT- 740; V44 Q47

Work experience and leadership - 2.2 years full time work ex. I have 7 months experience in product marketing at a small home automation/security business and 1.7 years experience as a product analyst for an OTT platform in a big tech company (Jio) that required me to perform many product management duties as well (Platform ownership, sprint planning, project management)
I have additional 6 months work ex being an editor (not a full time role) and some months experience participating in organizing a college festival but doubt that would be relevant.

Post MBA goals - I would like build on my current foundation to pursue product management in the consumer internet industry

Anything else?
I am currently also doing a 7 month Post grad certificate in product management in India and learning the basics of Python (as part of the course)

My primary concern is if my work experience and the quality of it would be a deal breaker - and if not- if I would have limited scholarship opportunity because of it

Yes, your concerns are limited work experience (less about quality and more about length) is going to make it more difficult for you to get into Haas. Scholarship money is going to be even more difficult.

Why do you need to apply this year? Are you eager to move on from your current role? Can you potentially spend another year working and apply next year? You could also switch jobs that potentially gets you closer to your goal of PM in the consumer internet industry.

Your extracurricular activities appear thin. That will also make it more difficult as those can balance out work experience for younger candidates.

I'm not saying you can't apply, but even with a great GMAT score it'll be a tossup.
