Hi everyone,

I have been preparing for gmat for 3-4 months now. I am planning to retake the exam within a month, hoping to score 740 or higher since this score will put me in above average section wrt gmat scores of schools I am targeting(T15) and improve my chances for scholarship

Materials used in First Attempt:

Verbal:
Learnt Basic of SC through a course(Gmat whiz)
Solved OG and verbal review all questions.
Quant:
Solved some advanced sets by Bunuel

Took 6 GMAT prep Mocks:
Ranging from 700-730 (Q49-51 , V34-V40)
last 2 (5 and 6) i got V39 and V40 - which boosted my confidence

the above took around 2-3 months of time spending 3-5 hrs everyday

Took first attempt in June - 640 Q50 V26
Cancelled the score
I was overwhelmed by verbal
writing exam with mask felt weird.

Decided to concentrate on improving my verbal - mainly improve my reading (big RC passages scared me away)

Materials used in second attempt:

Verbal:
Resolved the OG verbal questions
Did the RC and CR comprehensive set of questions by souvik101990
Did the Hundred 700+ SC questions

Solving a lot of RC and CR improved my comfort with the verbal sections

For Mocks:
Used MGMAT 5 mocks:
Scored v33-v36 and Q44-Q47 ( but I knew Q section had hard question with less time compared to gmat prep, and they have a amazing mock analysis system where we can see score after each question, so before running out of time I was always at Q51)

Gmat Prep:
Retook 3 of them 730,760,760
Some repeat questions so scores were inflated\

Wrote my mocks with masks on :D

Just a week away I started using error log for SC and was able to learn some new concepts
After 1 month from my first attempt. I took the second one recently.

Score 720 Q50 V37 IR7 AWA 3.5
-Accepted the score
-How much ever I practiced some new SC questions appears in the exam (first question because of which I lost extra minute and just randomly selected the answer)
-3rd RC passage was long and difficult - spend 3-4 minutes extra and probably only got 2/4 correct.
-I ran out of time and randomly chose answers for last 5-6 questions.

Looking to retake within a month before R1 applications.
I think my weakness are:
1) Hard questions in all categories
2) Long RC passages.
3) Average Verbal question timing.

I am not able to attach my ESR here.
Sub Section Rankings(percentile):
CR - 75
RC - 71
SC - 78

Time Management:
Overall - 1:46
CR - 1:40
RC 2:17
SC : 1:24

Percent Correct:
1st Quarter - 62%
2nd Quarter - 71%
3rd Quarter - 71%
4th Quarter - 62%

Even now, you could hit a 740 on a good day. Focus on CR and SC questions in the next one month (will show more immediate result) and keep practicing everything else. Best wishes!

To improve your pace in verbal, you could read the following post and apply what it discusses.

Regarding getting hard questions correct, have you been doing most practice questions timed or untimed?

Hi, Thank you for the reply.

I will check out the link you provided.

All of my practice is timed. I have been targeting 2min per CR , 6 mins RC passage and around 1 min 30 sec for SC. overall I try to average 65/36 min per question. This would be ideal when I don't waste time in answering hard questions or not account for test day factors.
Here's the thing. To learn to get hard questions correct, you're best off doing much of your practice untimed to give yourself time to learn how to get them correct and play around with ways of answering them faster. So, maybe a big part of your solution is untimed practice.

I talk about untimed practice in the context of verbal in this post.

720 is a great score and will be more than enough for any school.

I'd focus on the essays and the rest of the application. Spend the time improving those would make a much bigger impact.

Good luck!

Help: How to go from 720 to 740+ in 1 month?

Consider working on your solving approach. Perhaps work with a study buddy who has ace verbal skills. Had a 6-hour student, for example, who went from a 680 to a 740 (v31 to v40 retake) in about 30 days, so it's possible to improve in these last few weeks. The difference between a 720 and a 740 may partly depend on how hard it was to get the 720 to begin with. Whether you usually score below 700 on Official Mocks or above 740, for example.

The GMAT Knight blog has a video on the Negation Technique for CR assumption questions you might want to leverage.
