Solution

Given:
    • |3x - 1| = x + 5

To find:
    • Value(s) of x.

Approach and Working:
    • For 3x-1 >= 0 or x >\(\frac{1}{3}\), 3x-1= x+ 5
      o 2x =6, x =3
    • For 3x -1< 0, or x < \(\frac{1}{3}\), 3x-1 = -(x+5)
      o 4x =-4, x =-1

Thus, x = -1, 3

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

|3x - 1| = 3x-1 or |3x - 1| = -3x+1 and therefore 2 values of x with both 3 and-1
