Re: If w + x + y = 42, what is the value of wxy? [#permalink]
TeamGMATIFY wrote:
Given: w+x+y =42 - (i)
Required: wxy

Statement 1:
x and y are consecutive odd integers, this means
y = x+2
On substituting the value of y in the given equation (i)
w + x + (x+2) = 42
We cannot solve for wxy from this.
INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
w = 2x.
On substituting the value of w in the given equation (i)
2x + x + y = 42
We cannot solve for wxy from this also.
INSUFFICIENT

Statements 1 and 2 combined:
On combining both the equations, we know that
y = x+2 and w =2x

On substituting these values in equation (i)
2x+ x + (x+2) = 42, hence x = 10

This means, y = 12 and w =20.

Now we have all the values required to find out wxy.
SUFFICIENT

P.S: Note that I did not solve for the value of wxy. Solving is not required in this problem and we can save precious time here.
We just need to tell if the data provided is sufficient or not.

Thanks for the analysis,
Solving the equations above we have x=10 and Y=12, which are even integers, doesn't that violate Option A, which says X and Y are ODD integers.

Yea that's my question.

It say's that both are consecutive ODD integers.

So our answer is E?

What is the source of the question ?? Some sources are notorious for being 'poor sources' of questions.

If w + x + y = 42, what is the value of wxy? [#permalink]

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In DS, Variable approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer without actually solving the problem. Remember equal number of variables and equations ensures a solution.

If w + x + y = 42, what is the value of wxy?

(1) x and y are consecutive odd integers
(2) w = 2x

==> Since we have 3 variable in the original condition 3개(w,x,y) and 1 equation, (w+x+y=42), we need 2 more equations to match the number of variables and equations. Since we have 1 each in 1) and 2), answer is likely C and it actually is.

In actual calculation using both 1) & 2), w+x+y=42, 2x+x+x+2=42(x can't be 10 since it is odd number) 2x+x+x-2=42, x=11 therefore w=2x=2*11=22, x=11, y=9 and therefore it is sufficient. Therefore the answer is C.

Hi TeamGMATIFY,
You may have got the answer as C, which is the right answer .. but your solution is not correct..
you hav egot your answer as even integers, whereas it is given in statement 1 that x and y are odd integers...
you will have to put y=x+2 and then solve for x and y..

Thanks a lot chetan2u for pointing that one out.
Will correct the solution.

Dear Bunuel ,

Is this question correct? even after putting y= x+2 , x and y seem to be consecutive even rather than consecutive odd.
If we do not get x and Y as consecutive odd integers , then statement 1 seems to violate the answers.

Please correct me , if I am missing anything. Is it possible to get x and y as consecutive odd with any combination?

Question is fine. See Math Revolutions explanation above.

Thanks , x and x-2 are also consecutive integers , only tried with x and x+2 .
