In a study of the behavior of adolescents to parental pressures,it was found that the use of pressure by parents did not always elicit a negative behavior in the adolescents. While most of them reacted adversely, a few developed mature and independent thinking as a reaction to such pressure. It seems that use of pressure does produce good in some cases.

This question is not a good one. Which source is it from?
For this type of weaken question, the alternative cause may not be a weakener. For instance, we cannot reason that overeating will not lead to overweight because not exercising leads to overweight.

How about B. Altrenate Cause can be taken as intelligence. The intelligence caused them to develop +ve traits

I also voted for B. Option D talks about factors other than parental pressure. So doesn't that make it out of scope? We are concerned with effects of parental pressure.
Can someone comment on this?

Hi Rohan89,

A typical way to weaken the argument is to suggest an alternate explanation for the event.

Option D does just that. It tells that other factors may play the role and that the parental pressures are not responsible for the positive traits.

Option B tells that all who reacted favorably were intelligent(out of scope since intelligence was never the question).

I am confused between A and D. I understand OA is D and can very well realize why. But A makes sense too. If the adverse effects are present even when there is no parental pressure that weakens the conclusion too. Thank you!

I marked option D but had trouble getting to it because the statement says "may". Can may be used in these type of weakening questions?

Whether parental pressure or not these type of adolescents always react adversely. The statement that some adolescents react in a positive way even with parental pressure has no mention in this option and hence does nothing to weaken the conclusion that even with parental pressure some react in a positive way.

I feel this is the reason why option A is incorrect

I think the correct answer choice is B.
Here we say All the adolescents who reacted favorably . Thus this can be another cause thus undermining the argument.
And if we look at option D.
Factors other than parental pressure may play a role in --- here the word may undermines the validity of the option itself. There is a probability that other factors ere not at all the cause.

Thus I think the correct answer is B
