Re: In the early stages of genetic research, a genetics company [#permalink]
PeepalTree wrote:
In the early stages of genetic research, a genetics company established a plan to sequence the genomes of every citizen within a certain 5-mile radius. The company's goal was to cure a certain hereditary disease common to that area. The goal was far too ambitious; critics argue that this is a result of the company's lack of scientific foresight.

Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest support for the conclusion of the argument?

a. Funds allocated for the project were sufficient to cover only a small percentage of the planned sequencings.
b. The company based their plan on models that eventually proved ineffective for other companies.
c. To date, only fifty genomes have been successfully sequences.
d. Other genetics companies have managed to identify the genes responsible for certain illnesses.
e. The hereditary disease being researched is caused by a combination of inherited genetics and environmental conditions.

source: 800 score

Reasoning : compnay want to cure the heredity disease in certain area, but critics strongly oppose that, so we need the statemnet which will tell us that company' efforts will be not helpful in curing disease and strengthen critic argument
Explanation:
a) weaken the crtics argument
b) out of scope
c)out of scope
d)irrelevant , not bothered about other companies
e) strengthen critic argument, so E is clearly winner here

a. Funds allocated for the project were sufficient to cover only a small percentage of the planned sequencings.
This doesn't hepl us why they were scientifically mundane wherein it might be that theyb understood the process however were not incapable with the current density influencded by other factors

b. The company based their plan on models that eventually proved ineffective for other companies.
What others committed is throughly out of context we are not bothered

c. To date, only fifty genomes have been successfully sequences.
This felt like a viable one however we have no idea these were the genes of intrest or simply survey samples at random

d. Other genetics companies have managed to identify the genes responsible for certain illnesses.
As stated above we were never intrested in what other people did

e. The hereditary disease being researched is caused by a combination of inherited genetics and environmental conditions
Yeah if the cure cannot be completed resourced as it has a multifacet influence factor such as environmental parameters then definitely it sheds light into that they haven't sufficiently researched the same hence IMO E
