The subject is compound and hence you need a plural pronoun 'them'.
Pronouns such as it, that and these do not have a specific antecedent to fall back on. Internalize is a verb and a pronoun can not refer to it. That is the reason that the adverb ‘so’ which modifies the verb of ‘internalize’ is preferable over ‘it’

Choice C is the correct one.

We have to use doing so + them ; in other options it, that, and these have illogical antecedents.

Answer: C

It, that and these cannot be used here because they lack logical antecedents. Also, this is commonly tested on the gmat.
Only "so" can stand for "action" phrases, which in this case is "internalize the principles...."

That leaves us with C and D.
D is gross because of "him"
"him" is ambiguous, singular and also kind of sexist :P
C is the correct answer

...because doing so is correct expression, leaving two answers C and D. In addition, D uses pronoun him, which is incorrect.
So the answer is C.
