A is the cleanest of the lot. Its got the right modifying phrase in the right place, and it is parallel as well

Though initially i also selected A but on rethinking D can be the answer

Will try to explain...

Since cost is uncountable so "less" is preferred over "lower". This leaves us with A,B and D. B has an ambiguous "they".

I think the author is not simply trying to compare minivans with SUVs rather he comparing a minivan loaded with 7 passenger with most SUVs. D does that comparison very well.

Does that make sense???

oops i took the Question otherways
anyways why cant be the comparison be of general minivans?

here there are two cases :
(1) general minivans
(2)minivas loaded with 7 and more people
Again in the question stem we are comparing minivans with other utility vehicles hence it makes sense if we compare minivans in general ,their capacity and cost efficiency etc. with other vehicles

I would like to know how we will decide among above two ,that is actual intent in the statement

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
== WRONG, this structure is AAA and BBB, CCC, DDD, and EEE. The “and” between “AAA” and “BBB” is not correct.

B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less,
=CORRECT

C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they
== WRONG – with the “and” before “have a lower cost”, it seems that “in comparison with most sport utility vehicles” modifies “Minivans carry as many as seven passengers”.

D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
== WRONG – progressive tense is not necessary here. I’d prefer using “which” clause.

E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they
== WRONG – the “and” before “they” is not correct.

And is B

I dont agree with B since minivans, xyz, they cost ... is incorrect

OA given is D. I'm not sure if it is okay with having two participles (i.e. carrying~, compared~). I went to A since after the comma we have comparisons. Pls elaborate your answer further? Thanks.

The problem with A) is "and" so sentence becomes X has A and B, C and D which is wrong

D clearly suggests that minivans which has same capacity as most SUVs cost less, B and C .... which is right.

Is the and, creating a punctuation error? I've never seen it like this before.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,

No its no error.
As someone stated above, difference b/w A and D is:

A) compares a Minivan with 7 passengers on board.
D) compares a Minivan, which can seat as many as 7 passengers.

in D, the 7 passengers is just another characteristic, not part of the comparison.

I selected A for obvious reasons and got it wrong.

D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven [passengers, {compared with most sport utility vehicles}], cost less,

Here, if you look in the brackets, the inner phrase{} improperly qualify passengers. Isn't it?

Agreed it could be a prepositional phrase or an appositive, but even then it should be touching to the object it is referring to, either from the front or back ends of the phrase.

No it does not.

carrying as many as seven passengers is a dependent clause and not a modifier such as that/which. It is not necessary that the reference either precede or follow immediately to the word its referring to. Most of the times that is the case with which, but which also has certain exceptions.

Take the dependent clause off the sentence and read it. It makes perfect sense.

This problem test the placement of modifier as well as parallelism.

cost ..., get better ..., allow passengers... and have a smooth ... .

These 4 phrase are parallel. Which leaves us only A, B and D.

B is wrong because of the pronoun usage of "they" is confusing.

A is wrong because misuse of parallelism. In A the // goes
carry ... and cost ..., get better ..., allow passengers... and have a smooth ... .

Hope this helps.

icandy and billyjeans, can you please explain how is A misusing the parallelism. I can't find any grammatical error in A. I feel I am missing the meaning here for this SC. I generally stick to original choice as per GMAC instructions in case two choices seem fine.
