Let's use actual numbers. Starting in 1992, let's say company C had $100 in assets.

In 1993, the total assets were 400% GREATER, which means 1992 PLUS 400% of 1992:
$100 + 4x$100 = $100 + $400 = $500

In 1994, the total assets were 300% GREATER than they were in 1993, which means 1993 PLUS 300% of 1993:
$500 + 3x$500 = $500 + $1500 = $2000

This is 20 times the 1992 number, so the correct answer is 20N.

EDIT: looks like i was beaten to the punch!

1992=100 1993=+400% (100)=500 1994=+300%(1993)=2000

N=10, in 1994 must be 2000, so the ans is E

It can be done alternatively with successive change without use of paper n pen.

Consecutive increase of 400% n 300% of N dollar.
So, Total change %= 400+300+(400*300)/100=1900%

So Net change = N=1900% of N=N+19N=20N

Let the asset in 1992 be 1.
In 1993 it becomes 400%, 1+ 4*1 ==> 5.
This 5 becomes 300%, 5 + 5*3 ==> 20.
Hence asset becomes 20 times.

Re: The total of company C's assets in 1994 was 300% greater tha [#permalink]
Assets in 93 = 100
Assets in 94 = 500 (Increase 400% = 100 + 400)
Assets in 95 = 2000 (Increase 300% = 500 + 1500)

Total rise from 93 to 95 is 20 times

Answer = 20N = E

The total of company C's assets in 1994 was 300% greater than the total in 1993, which in turn was 400% greater than the total in 1992. If the total of company C's assets in in 1992 was N dollars, which one of the following represents company C's assets in 1994:

A. 7N
B. 8N
C. 9N
D. 12N
E. 20N

The total of company C's assets in 1992 was N dollars

Company C's assets in 1993 was 400% greater than the total in 1992
So, 1993 assets = (1992 assets) + (400% of 1992 assets)
= (N) + (400% of N)
= (N) + (400/100 x N)
= N + 4N
= 5N

Company C's assets in 1994 was 300% greater than the total in 1993,
So, 1994 assets = (1993 assets) + (300% of 1993 assets)
= (5N) + (300% of 5N)
= (5N) + (300/100 x 5N)
= (5N) + (15N)
= 20N

Answer: E

1992: N
1993: \((400/100)N + N\) = \(5N\) (emphasis on greater than)
1994: \((300/100)5N + 5N\) = \(20N\) (again emphasis on greater than)
