Re: If (a+b)/(a-b)=55/17 then what is a/b=? [#permalink]
Let....

a + b = 55x .............. (1)

a - b = 17x ............... (2)

=======================

2a = 72x

a = 36x

b = 55x - 36x = 19x

\(\frac{a}{b} = \frac{36}{19}\)

Answer = B

If \(\frac{(a+b)}{(a-b)}=\frac{55}{17}\) then what is \(\frac{a}{b}\) ?

B) \(\frac{36}{19}\)

C) \(\frac{19}{7}\)

D) \(\frac{3}{2}\)

E) \(\frac{43}{17}\)

Only in B 36+19=55 and 36-19=17

a+b=55
a-b=17

Adding the 2 equation,we get 2a=72,a =36 and b=36-17=19

Options are in the form of a/b so according to the question the sum of numerator and denominator(a+b=55) should be equal to 55. The only option satisfying the condition is B 36+19=55.

Hi, is this a correct method to solve:

(A+B) + (A-B) = 55 + 17
2A = 72
A=36
Therefore B = 19

(a+b)/(a-b)= 55/17
Now using Componendo & Dividendo
(a+b+a-b)/(a+b-a+b) = (55+17)/(55-17)
2a/2b =72/38
a/b= 36/19

Answer B

Kindly press "+1 Kudos" to appreciate :)

I feel this is one of the best method and also the old skool concept...
No need to find a & b separately.

a+b = 55x
a-b = 17x

So 2a = 72
a = 36
So answer B
so answer should be

\(2a = 72\)

So, \(a = 36\)

Now, a + b = 55

So, 36 + b = 55

Or, \(b = 19\)

Hence, \(\frac{a}{b} = \frac{36}{19}\) , answer will be (B)
