Yes, over the last ten years that I have been involved in MBA admissions, GMAT scores have increased. If you can dig up an old
US News you will see that the average scores for top schools used to be lower.
I just did that. My vintage 1997 edition shows that Wharton's matriculating class of 1996 had an average GMAT score of 662, MIT's 650, Kellogg's 660, CBS 660, etc. You get the idea.
I believe the improved scores are a result of more and more students taking prep courses, but I don't know for sure. What started as strictly an extra of questionable benefit, became a good idea, and then virtually mandatory.
Frankly, I suspect the same is happening for essays.
