Re: Need to increase my score from 480 to my target score of 700 ! [#permalink]
Hi Rich !

Thank you so much for the reply.
I'm studying since 2 months now. Though I completed the course in near institute back in March.
I lost my touch and had to start from scratch :(

I'm done with the OG and almost done with the Manhattan guides.

I know it's really not possible for me to increase my score to 700+ but since I'm not working I am ready to put all of time in the prep. Also i've covered all the topics of quant and verbal. I think I need more practise and clarity in concepts of some topics in quant. I'm willing to put it all of my time right now and try harder.

Should I wait for the next two mocks and see if I'm improving ? Cause I'm afraid if I can push the dates as I have some other exams.
Do you think if I can improve my score in next 2 mocks I can get to my target score ? Or atleast hit 680 ?

My score in the first mock was 460 (Q34 and V16)
And in the second mock I score 480 ( Q30 and V23 )

And I realized in the mock after analyzing them. I took a lot of time to solve the problems in quant hence I lost a lot of time and I tried to pace getting all of the answers wrong during that time as I then skipped the problems :|

You think I can still improve my score? Is it doable ?

Thank you :)

Hi Sanskruti,

In my prior post, I mentioned that I thought that you would need at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study to hit your goal - and I still believe that that is the case. On a fundamental level, a 680 is essentially the same score as a 700, so you would likely need at least another 3 months to hit that score too.

Beyond doing lots of practice problems though, you need consistent, professional guidance, so that you can learn all of the patterns, tactics and 'secrets' of the GMAT (without having to try to figure out all of that stuff on your own). You would likely find it beneficial to invest in a GMAT Course of some kind (either Guided Self-Study or Instructor-Led). Most GMAT Companies offer some type of free materials (practice problems, Trial Accounts, videos, etc.) that you can use to 'test out' a product before you buy it. We have a variety of those resources at our site (www.empowergmat.com). I suggest that you take advantage of all of them then choose the one that best matches your personality, timeline and budget.

If you have any additional question, then just let me know.

Hi,

My GMAT was scheduled for the 25th November of 2016 for which i thought i was not prepared enough so i have rescheduled it to May 15th 2017 !
I scored 480 in the last mocks that I gave in the month of November.
I've solved the OG (12th edition) and read the Manhattan guides.
Since I rescheduled my exam. I have lost a touch since then and now I want to restart from where I stopped.
My target score is 700 !
I want to know how I should go about know with 3 months to the GMAT.
What books to refer and how to strategically plan my study ?

Hi Sanskruti,

Since your last posts were from early November, I have a few questions about how you've been studying since then:

1) Did you actually take the GMAT on November 25th (and if you did, then how did you score?)?
2) Have you done ANY studying in the last 2 months?

If it's really been over 2 months since you took a FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections), then you should start by taking one. Once you have that score result, you should post back here and we talk through your options.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply.
Well, I didn't take the GMAT in November as I was not prepared enough and even you suggested that I need atleast 3 months more to prepare to hit my target score.
Also, I haven't been really studying specifically for GMAT since 2 months. But I have been learning Quant and Verbal concepts since I'm preparing for other MBA entrance too. So, I'm not totally secluded from the studies.
But, 3 months to go I would like to restart on my prep for GMAT.
And yes, I will be giving a full length CAT so as to see If I'm still able to score as much as I did 2 months back.
If you could tell me how to go about it and which books to refer ! :)

\i think you have enough time but you must be dedicated. Set up an error log if you havent done so. Analyze your mistakes on every mock and work on your weaknesses. you must be confident of getting at least Q48 every time to have a chance at getting to 700.

Hi Sanskruti,

You used a 'book heavy' study approach last time - and the practice results were far from your goals. Thus, you probably should not use that same type of approach again. We can certainly discuss your options (and plans) in more detail, but first I'd like to see how you score on a new FULL-LENGTH CAT.

Hi anasmousa,

You might find it useful to start your own post thread so that the conversation/advice can stay focused on your situation (instead of piggy-backing on this thread). Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi anasmousa,

If we assume that your current 'ability level' is around a 370, then you'll have to raise that score 200+ points to hit your score goal. By extension, you will have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. With an October 27th Test Date though, you only have 3 weeks of study time available - and improving that much in such a short period of time is probably too difficult to be considered realistic. You will likely need at least another 2-3 months of consistent, guided study to hit 570+, so you should consider pushing back your Test Date.

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi anasmousa,

Given everything that you've described, you would likely benefit a great deal from investing in a GMAT Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led), so you should plan to look into the available options.
