Welcome to everyone applying to Rice-Jones Professional MBA Class of 2020. Use this platform to collaborate, ask questions, discuss application strategies and share useful information for this upcoming application cycle.
I will be the Threadmaster for RICE this year and I look forward to discussing the application process with you all.
It looks like RICE changed this year's essays to include one compulsory video essay. The video essay was optional last year. A good reason for this is for adcoms to check your creativity. I think this poses a unique challenge that applicants must adhere to. The challenge is to make it as interesting as possible but also convey the message as clearly as possible.
Here are the details:
Requirement: Two essays for Full-Time MBA and MBA for Professionals applicants; one essay for Executive MBA applicants
Full-Time MBA & MBA for Professionals Required Video Essay:
"Everyone has a unique story and path that have led them to this point. What is your story from both a professional and personal standpoint? How does the Rice Business experience fit into your story?" (Three minute limit)
We encourage you to be creative with your video! However, please note that the video essay must include you speaking on camera so that the admissions committee and can not only hear you, but can also see you share your story. Full-Time MBA & MBA for Professionals Required Written Essay (choose one topic):
“Describe a defining moment or event that changed your life.” (300 word limit)
"What are the top 10 items on your bucket list?” (One-page limit, bullet points allowed)
"Tell us something, different, quirky, and/or interesting about yourself that the admissions committee wouldn't glean from the rest of your application or interview." (250 word limit)

Do they start reviewing applications straight away or do they wait until the deadline has passed?
Perhaps Rice send out interview emails to everyone due to the small volume of applications?

I believe they will review applications right after they receive them. But their turn around time is really fast. In my case, it was only 2 days. Probably due to low application volume.

When is your interview?
I'm almost ready to apply for R1. I just need to revise my short answers. What struck me though, is that the prompt for essay 1 was revised. When I checked it the first time, the video essay was mandatory. I was shocked to learn that they've added a written essay option later. I was done with my video essay by then. I thought that was random.

Did you shoot a video essay?

Yeah, I found out about it right before I was about to submit the application. I already had my video ready so I just submitted the video.
Nice..good luck with it. May I suggest you refer to all the interview prep material the admissions consultants are preparing and posting on the forum. You can also check last year's post to help you prepare for the interview.
The new deadline is now Nov 1st. but they would still release admits on Dec. 15th. I don't really know how that will work since now they have to process apps from Oct 5th and Nov 1st, arrange for interviews (for the 2nd batch of apps), and then release their decisions by Dec. 15th.
Looks like I'm the only one here who didn't receive an interview invitation. I submitted before Oct 5th and I really hope they review my application before the new R1 deadline.
Does anyone know if you can check your status on the application portal like for other schools?
