Please explain how to arrive at the 1 part of question's answer !!!

The question asks you to find out at which time interval was the flight
closer to its destination at time - X than at time - Y. This is only possible
when the distance either remains the same or increases after the time
has passed.

If you observe the graph carefully, the only time when the graph is
moving in the opposite direction(is from t=60 to t=80)

Therefore, it is the answer that you looking for. Hope that helps!

Suppose I take a flight from Mumbai to Delhi.
At the starting my Distance to destination = 1000 (suppose)
At the starting my time travelled = 0

Now as time elapses my distance from destination will reduce right? So shouldn't the answer be the maximum time elapsed? Because ultimately I will be at the destination when I actually reach Delhi and that is the moment when my time lapsed will be maximum.

I didn't understand you reasoning. Can you please explain w.r.t. my example.

Here, we are asked to find the distance w.r.t the destination in that
specific timeline. For instance if I had given you two time ranges
and asked you to compare the distances for those ranges,

Option 1 : t=10 to 20 (distance traveled 100 to 75 km) - detour due to turbulence
Option 2 : t=50 to 60 (distance traveled 275 to 375 km)

Here, the plane travels closer to the destination by 100 km in Option 2
but it travels 25 km away from the destination in Option 1. So we can
say that the plane was closer to its destination at t=10 than it was at
t=20 and Option 1 is the answer!

Hope this helps!

HI Pushpit

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Am afraid, but I may request you to please help me on this. Am sure we all are missing some point here which is leading to incorrect answer.

While you have explained using a hypothetical example, would you please be kind to help me/us using actual data of the graph to derive answer to Q1.

1). I think what am struggling with the concept is a plane is said to be " closer to it' destination " when the distance between plane and destination is least. I took this as my reference to derive the time slot which represents this i.e. 240/260.

2). From your example I understand that it is the maximum travelled distance between a time slot that should be the answer, but you took the time slot where we travelled only 25 kms instead of 100 kms.?

Please can you help/ or anyone please help :)

Thank You

Hi..

For all those confused on the questions..

Question I
The first question talks of the interval when the distance from destination increased. So, in general as time elapses, the destination comes closer, so any move downwards and right is giving closeness to the destination..
But at 60 and 80, rather than moving downwards, it is moving upwards, so it is moving farther away from the destination during this interval. Now, the flight is not going to take an exact straight path towards the destination. It may be the plane has to take a small detour because of some disturbance or a no flying zone.
Even at interval 120-140, the distance remains constant
Answer - 60-80

Question II
You have to find the maximum distance that the plane travels in a time interval..
the answer is the interval where the drop is the steepest.. 180-200

I made the same mistake on this IR question and was wondering how could they consider the plane to be closer at "t=60-80" instead of "t=240-260" but I guess we all missed the conjunction "than" which brings in comparison within each time frame. So ideally the question was asking whether
a. the plane was closer at t=60 than at t=80
OR
b. the plane was closer at t=240 than at t=260

Looking at the graph only in case of a the statement holds true as the plane was closer at t=60 and the distance increased at t=80
