100kg=99kg water+ 1kg potato solid
After drying
Xkg=98% of X water + 2% of X potato solid
Since, Potato solid will be constant
hence, 2/100*X=1kg
X=50Kg.

100kgs of potato has 99% water ; or say 99kgs water and 1 kgs of other weight ; later the water 99 % becomes 98 % and other 2% is 1 part ; 1/2
100*1/2 ; 50 kgs
IMO C

Rahim bought 100 kg potato from market & 99% of its are water so he dried it whole night to make it 98% water. In the morning How many kilogram of potato left to him?

It is given that 100 kg potato from market & 99% of its are water
Potato starch=1kg
water = 99kg

Rahim dried it whole night to make it 98% water. We know that some of the water will be evaporated while drying in the sun. Let the water left after drying=x kg

x/(x+1) * 100 = 98
100x= 98x+98
2x=98
x=49

we already have 1 kg of potato starch, so total weight=49+1=50 kg

100kg 99% water 1% mass so 1% of 100= 1kg

after evaporation 98%water left, as mass remains constant now >> 1kg=2% of 100 kg

1=2/100 =50kg

Initially, we have 99 Kg of water in 100 Kg of potato and 1 Kg of potato by weight. Let w = the amount of water that evaporates, and we can create the equation:
(99 - w)/(100 - w) = 98/100
100(99 - w) = 98(100 - w)
9900 - 100w = 9800 - 98w
100 = 2w
50 = w
As 50 Kg of water evaporated, new weight of the potatoes will be 100 - 50 = 50 Kg.

100 gms contains 99 gms water & 1 gms of potato

After evaporation of water let X be the weight of potato

The potato is now 2%, hence, we have 1 = (2/100)* X

Hence Answer is Option C

Solving we get, X = 50 gms

as per qs, 100 Kg of Potato contains 99 kg of water & 1 kg of potato (at start).

After a night drying, potato % = 2%. let P be new weight of potato (after drying).

potato's new weight is 2% of total weight, which is equal to 1 kg = (2/100)* P

Solving we get, P = 50 Kgs

Answer should be C.

The answer is C: 50

EXPLANATION:

Let's assume x kg of water was dried from the 100kg of potatoes. Earlier, it was 99% water. Now, it becomes 98% water. So, our equation becomes:

\( (99-x)/(100-x) = 98/100 \)

The above equation signifies that x kg of water is removed from 99% water (and subsequently 100% of potatoes), giving 98% of water.

Solving the above equation, we get x = 50.

Now, the potato left would be the one after water is dried, which is 100 - x = 100 - 50 = 50 kg.

Hence, 50 kg is the answer.

100 kg potatoes are available.
Initially, 99% water and 1% potato pulp is present.
99% water = 99 kg water
1% potato pulp = 1 kg potato pulp.

Finally, 98% water and 2% potato pulp is present.

Since there is no change in the potato pulp quantity,
Therefore initial quantity of pulp = final quantity of pulp
Or, 2% potato pulp = 1 kg potato pulp
Or, 100% potato pulp = 50 kg potato pulp.
Therefore, he is left with 50 kg of potatoes.

Re: Rahim bought 100 kg potato from market & 99% of its are water so he dr [#permalink]
100 kg potatoes are there.

Initially,
99% water + 1% potato mash = 100% potatoes.
⇒ 99 kg water + 1 kg potato mash = 100 kg potatoes

Finally,
98% water + 2% potato mash = 100% potatoes

But, there is no change in the potato pulp quantity.

So, initial quantity of potato mash = final quantity of potato mash
⇒ 2% potato mash = 1 kg potato mash
⇒ 100% potato mash = 50 kg potato mash.
Therefore, 50 kg of potatoes are left with him.

C is the answer.

100kg potatoes will have 99kg water & 1kg potatoes

When Rahim dried the potatoes, only the water quantity was reduced by evaporation but the original quantity of potatoes stayed the same.

Let x be the amount of water evaporated. From 99kg water, if x kg is evaporated, the remaining amount of water will be (99-x)kg. Also, the total weight is reduced by x i.e. (100-x)

(99-x)/(100-x) = 98/100

The above equation says the remaining amount of water, upon the remaining amount of the original quantity is 98%

Solving it we get x = 50.

Since the amount evaporated is 50kg, the remaining weight is 50kg of which 49kg is water and 1kg is potatoes.

Kindly note that this could easily be a trick question on GMAT. Co-incidentally x=50 and the final answer is also 100-x = 50. If the original quantity was something different, say 120, and the equations solved to give x=50, the amount remaining would be 100-50=70. In the haste, a lot of people would mark 50. Remember to check the question being asked and answer that question.

100 kg = potato + water
100 kg = 99 potato + 1 water

0.98(100-x)=99-x
x=50

P W Tot
Before 1 99 100 (99%water in 100Kg potato, then xKg water is evaporated)
After 2 98 100-x ( new total is 100-x and 98% water so 2Kg is new potato content )

Since P ie potato solid content remains the same ie P1/(P1+W1)= 1/1+99= P2/(P2+W2)
1/100 * 100= 2/100 * (100-x)
100=200-2x so x=50 ; now potato content left = 100-50=50Kg
