Re: Last summer, after a number of people got sick from eating locally cau [#permalink]
Last summer, after a number of people got sick from eating locally caught anchovies, the coastal city of San Martin advised against eating such anchovies. The anchovies were apparently tainted with domoic acid, a harmful neurotoxin. However, a dramatic drop in the population of P. australis plankton to numbers more normal for local coastal waters indicates that it is once again safe to eat locally caught anchovies.

Which one of the following, if true, would most help to explain why it is now safe to lift the advisory?

(A) P. australis is one of several varieties of plankton common to the region that, when ingested by anchovies, cause the latter to secrete small amounts of domoic acid. - INCORRECT. 'one of the several varieties' ruins the option. However, it does so only because of the presence of option B in the way it is.
(B) P. australis naturally produces domoic acid, though anchovies consume enough to become toxic only when the population of P. australis is extraordinarily large. - CORRECT. Only when the population of the P. australis is large that anchovies consume enough so that they become toxic, which otherwise is normally not the case. This means anchovies are healthy for consumption when P australis population is not large.
(C) Scientists have used P. australis plankton to obtain domoic acid in the laboratory. - INCORRECT. At best Irrelevant. What scientists obtaining domoic acid in lab does good for our cause to know that it is now safe to lift the advisory. Nothing it looks like. It is not significant to know that.
(D) A sharp decline in the population of P. australis is typically mirrored by a corresponding drop in the local anchovy population. - INCORRECT. Okay the two populations are directly proportional but how it says it is now safe to lift the advisory.
(E) P. australis cannot survive in large numbers in seawater that does not contain significant quantities of domoic acid along with numerous other compounds. - INCORRECT. If the seawater doesn't contain significant quantities of domoic acid P. australis population drops. But does is helps us in knowing that it is now safe to lift the advisory. No, i don't see this option doing that.

Answer IMO B.
