I mean there are numerous ppl with stellar skills in all domains and still get dinged. The committee just wants a varied class, even if it means dinging a truly all round stellar candidate.


You know, this reminds me a bit of a girl I used to know back during my undergraduate applications. She was stellar all around - I'm talking enough college level credits to skip all of her entire freshman year at any US university, top of her class, 1500 something SAT (back when the max was 1600), etc. She applied everywhere and got rejected across the board - only got in at Cornell. We never figured it out.

Hindustan, sorry to hear about the ding.

I guess that only leaves me and flapjack hoping in R1.

So what do you think flapjack - either of us have a chance?


at times i wonder if it all depends on how much you show why that particular school...

I am wondering how much it makes a difference travelling to schools....so on that note, how many of you actually travelled to Kellogg?


I know mbaexchange.com 'strongly' encourages its clients to travel to schools.

Rhyme, we both have a chance. I'm not sure how good my chances are because I was certain I would get in to Chicago and only got on the Waitlist (although I still might get in).

I sent in both parts of the application the day before the first round due date and only had my interview about 4 weeks ago, so maybe that's why I have not heard anything.

I did visit Kellogg and have very strong ties to Northwestern - I will elaborate if I get in. I'd rather not do it now because I don't want to out myself.

I submitted a few days before the deadline but had completed my interview weeks before. I also have lots of ties to Northwestern - Kellogg specifically. I'm the exact opposite: I would have thought my odds at Kellogg were better than my odds at GSB, so maybe that means you'll get an admit and I'll get a waitlist!

Id love to hear today, but I've resigned myself to waiting till Monday.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I thought that my interview went pretty well, but it's always hard to tell. The interviewer said she was impressed by my resume but she did ask about extracurriculars (which are lacking - I work a lot and do not have any meaningful extracurriculars).

I really question the relevance of extra-curricular activities to being successful in business school and in the business world, but that's a post for another day.

On the BW forums, there seems to be an atmosphere of defeat. However, according to admissions411.com...

2008 R1
Applicants: 154
Accepted: 58 (37.66%)

2009 R1
Applicants: 175
Accepted so far: 41 (23.43%)

I am hopeful that there are still admits coming. I'd guess anywhere between 33.3% ((58 - 41) / 58) to 37.8% ((37.66 - 23.43) / 37.66) of admits remain.

I saw that post on BW too. Admissions411 definitely does not agree: only 3 were admitted off the R1 waitlist.

Indeed. 300 ON the waitlist is much more reasonable. Admissions411.com reports 60 people on the waitlist for all rounds last year.

400 peeps on adm411 / ~4000 real applicants = 10%
60 / 10% = 600 on the real waitlist, total

That seems a little high, but really, who knows.

We should start our own B-school on the premise that its application process will be the most open and transparent of all the schools. We'd get so many applicants... At $200 a pop, how could we go wrong?!

Well keep in mind that the cross section of applicants on admissions411 is heavily skewed to the 700+ range - which make up about 60% of the applicants - (see: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/adm ... res_06.pdf )

which also make up over 60% of student body. It stands to reason therefore that the number of waitlists at that level are, just like the admits, higher than below the 700 mark. That is, the breakdown is probably not linear - the number of waitlists over the 700 mark is likely higher than those below.

It's frustrating to realize that a decision has, in all likelyhood, already been made, and just not communicated.

Kellogg isn't very friendly to engineers and software peeps:

Engineering: 5 / 37 (13.51%)
Software Development: 2 / 17 (11.76%)
Compared to overall: 124 / 400 (31%)

Doesn't bode well for this sad software engineer :(
