would you recommend that I get a job, build up experience and wait until next year to apply?

edit: i've considered taking classes and building an alternate transcript, but i want to use it as a last resort because of the cost of the classes

gatorfuel,

Yes, waiting maybe the smartest move. Applying while unemployed is will making it tough for yourself.

Good luck,

Re: Please evaluate my profile [#permalink]
Hi Paul

I know it's been over a year since I've posted my initial evaluation, but I'd like to update my situation and would like for you to assess my profile so far:

I've been working since April 2008 for a startup software company as a consultant. I've done really well there, especially since my duties ranged from software testing to optimizing and managing the overall client services of the company. I'm (hopefully) switching to a new job next month since my current position is in limbo due to VC funding issues deriving from the current economic climate.

I've also decided to take classes at Baruch College so I can create an alternate transcript. So far, I've gotten an A in both Financial Accounting I and Introduction to Finance. I plan on taking 1 or 2 more classes.

Unfortunately, I've had to give up volunteering my time as a tutor earlier this year because the combination of work, night classes and effort needed to help both my sister and my mom go through the process of respectively buying an apartment in NYC (a co-op) is enough.

However, I do still interview candidates who apply to my alma mater.

As for leadership skills, I feel my best story come from my time at the start up company (having to step in to turn around the disappointing performance of client services to fix the past errors and to make the whole process more efficient). I can also use the example of helping my sis and my mom go through the entire ordeal of buying an apt by stepping in and managing the entire ordeal (pushing them to do the massive amounts of paper work to dealing directly with the bank and the real estate agent). My other leadership story would come from my time tutoring, where I came up with a nice way to convince my student that algebra isn't as hard as she was fearing.

Given the improvement in my profile, do you think I'm still a longshot for NYU, UCLA and Haas? Is this enough for me to have a reasonable chance at Georgetown or Texas? I plan to apply next fall. I'm also curious to see what you think my chances are at HBS, Northwestern, Michigan, etc.

I plan to apply most likely fall 2009 or at the latest 2010.

gatorfuel,

You should be more or less competitive at Georgetown and Texas. UCLA, NYU, and Michigan are reaches though not hideous longshots. I'd say your chances at Haas, HBS, and Northwestern are close to nil.

Hope this helps,
