Last year there was some dude who got into Princeton - he worked for one of the federal reserves and had glowing and personal recommendations from Professors who had Phds from schools such as Harvard / Chicago ( or some other top tier schools ) I'd say those would have been pretty shiny recommendations.

Regarding the recomendations: I have one from a VP in Merrill Lynch/Citigroup/UBS etc. (dont want to mention the exact bank). However, the academic recomendations are more difficult to get. In the UK the education is rather impersonal, hence I am not sure who will be the right person to approach. btw, what do u consider shining recomendations?
