Hello ,

Thanks for detailed analysis...

Can you please help me in shortlisting 4 universities

I think I should select 1 ultra Elite ,2 Elite and 1 near Elite university.....
to be on safe side ..Please correct me ....

I won't like to waste money unnecessarily , applying for colleges that don't fit my profile / expectations
Can you please help me in making that decision.....?

I am planning to get a Job in IT field as consulatant after doing MBA...

Cost of living expenses and scholarships are very important to me

I can get very good letter of recommendations .
I have got 2 promotions in 4 years .......
I am actively involved in community service

Thanks ,

Hi,

I would devote attention to the Near Elite and Near Elite Frontier schools for potential scholarship and merit aid opportunities. Investigate individual schools to see which ones offer large amounts of aid and are strong in the domains that interest you most.

Hi Hjort ,

I was going through one of your mails ...........

I am often asked by students to suggest "safety schools" to include in their portfolios. My (almost) universal response is this:

The concept of the safety school relies on highly misguided notions regarding the education process and personal motivation. Apply only to schools that genuinely interest and help you achieve your goals. If you are unable to gain acceptance to a school of sufficient quality (however you have defined this) in the present round or year, improve your application and reapply. After all, if you are spending 50,000 + on this endeavour you might as well get what you want . .
.

That sounds pretty convincing ......

Hjort ,Can you please suggest which schools I should apply( Elite , Trans Elite, Near Elite ) , considering the fact that my company will sponsor me for MBA or I will be financing it ....

Thanks ,

Do you want to limit yourself to one-year programs or at least less than two-year programs?

I don't like to use these terms, with all respect to Hjort. Also, if financial aid is extremely important to you, then while yes you should apply to highly ranked schools, your best chance of obtaining financial aid is at schools where you are slightly over qualified. Also, the two top-10 programs that have shortened curricula in the US (Kellogg and Columbia) don't really fit your profile. Kellogg is aimed at people with undergrad business degrees, which you don't have. CBS is a sixteen-month program, a little more than a year and longer than many European program, but not as long as most US programs.

I suggest you apply to Columbia and Cornell. I really don't have any special insight into financial aid, but I believe your chances of obtaining financial aid at Cornell are better than at Columbia.

Also consider Oxford Said and Cambridge Judge. You will be competitive at both. I would discourage INsead because of your lack of international experience.

Hi,

I agree with Linda that many of the one year programs probably do not make a good fit with your profile. If possible, you might want to reconsider the strength of your preference for a one year program.

Hello ,
Linda, Hjort Thanks

Reason I would like to do 1 Year MBA insetad of 2 year MBA

1.Living and tution Expenses for 1 year MBA are comparatively lower than 2 year MBA
2.You can complete your MBA in one year .
3. I don' want to change my field ,I will like to open up my own IT consultancy

That's why I am I want to do 1 year MBA

Please suggest some good schools offering 1 year MBA ( with financial aid ) in Top 50 .

What is your opinion about ISB , Hyderabad,India?

All the schools I suggested are in the top 50 and one-year programs (or 16 months).

I don't know a lot about ISB. My understanding is that it is a great school if you want to stay in India.

Good luck!

If you like to work in India after your MBA, then I would say ISB is a great option.
This is what I got about ISB from my contact:
- Lots of industry interaction through clubs, regular guest speakers, one-on-one interactions depending on your work, etc
- ILS (Leadership Summit) brings over 150 CEOs to the campus, etc
- For IT, apart from tons of Indian Cos, Microsoft, Accenture, Yahoo, Amazon, Sapient, lots of Silicon Valley start-ups, etc..
- For finance, Goldman Sachs, Lehman, Deutsche, Fidelity, etc.. and almost all Indian banks
- Global exposure through exchange programmes at Kellogg, Wharton, Darden, LBS, etc

Have you considered Queen's in Ontario?

I would also consider Pittsburgh (Katz) which has been operating one of the best 1 year programs in the US for decades.

I agree that ISB's PG Program is an excellent option as well.
