Round One Decisions
Date: November 02, 2010

It's November 2. Tomorrow afternoon we will be sending out three kinds of emails:

A few more invitations to interview
Roughly 100 offers to join the waitlist
"Release" decision

You've probably noticed that I tend to keep these updates short and to-the-point. I could go on and on about various things - the strength of the applicant pool, how the challenge here is not about "evaluation" (again, because of the strength of the pool), but more about "selection." The challenge is not to rank order candidates, but to comprise a balanced class. I could talk about how I wish we could give customized feedback to denied candidates - but even if we had the resources to do this, most of the conversations would be, "You're fine, but so are many, many others." I could describe our evaluation process - and reiterate that each candidate not invited to interview gets at least two reviews.

But I'll stop - and end this update hoping that this "early release" experiment is seen as a positive step.

Do we think that "a few" is necessarily less than 100? or am i reading too much into the wording? maybe she just doesn't want anyone to know that number but the waitlist number is fine to go out?

I think there is a lot less visibility into the waitlist number than the invite number, so its nice that she'd give us a bit of insight.

I don't know if there is an implication that the number of invites to go out is <100, but Dee has told us that there are 800 total invites going out R1 and now we know that there are 100 R1ers on the waitlist as well. Good intel, I suppose.

Re: Calling all HBS 2011 Applicants!! (Including 2+2) [#permalink]
I do think few = very few... But I see only 100 = good news for waitlisters... this would mean that a waitlister actually gets a shot if the R1 interviews don't turn out as favorably as they had hoped for.

So here is the math. Let's say that they had targeted 60% yield on the 800 invites: 800*60%=480. So assume they are looking for 480 admits from R1, now you use that 480 / (800 + 100) = 53%. 53% is still within the range of expected yield. If 50% of the waitlisters get an interview, the yield would be 480 / (800 + 50) = 56%, totally within the range of historical interview/admit yield. Obviously this is a pure statistical argument... but I'd say a waitlister would get a 50% shot at receiving an interview.

Good luck to all of us tomorrow afternoon!

Hi,
I've been lurking around the chat for a bit. First, good luck to everyone waiting for an invitation tomorrow. Second, I'm wondering if HBS ever releases decisions before 10/14. Do any of the top schools (Wharton, Kellogg, Columbia) release decisions before their stated date?
Thanks!

Some do, especially schools that like to call their acceptees. Traditionally, HBS has not done so, from what I can glean of the past years.

Thousands of people get rejected from HBS each year. There's no shame in it. While I'm disappointed that I wasn't extended an invite, I have no doubt that I, and all the other talented and intelligent people on this forum, will find success and happiness elsewhere. Best of luck in future endeavors everyone!

I think this is the right attitude. Yes no-invite from HBS must hurt because for many of us here HBS is the dream school, but at the end of the day everyone one will get their best out of this MBA app process.

With the WL without int, it really depends on the quality of the R2 pool whether you will get the invite.

It's 8:32am in Boston right now.. I can close my eyes and imagine the Admissions Committee members having a coffee, or maybe being still stuck in traffic, getting ready for today's work, which will shatter dreams and rekindle hope...

Have an excellent day, AdCom!

Nothin yet. Just pointing out that for most of us, this board will be obsolete in a few minutes / hours.

Might want to phrase that better. Made people (i.e. me) think that you had received an email from adcom...false alarms are not cool (especially when they're all in caps).

Also, remember that Dee's post from yesterday said "tomorrow afternoon" they will be sending out emails...no need to have adrenaline pumping all morning (more to myself than anyone in particular)
