Hi,

Can you please Evaluate my Profile and suggest what can I do to improve my chances. I m planning to apply for the class starting in fall 2014.

Nationality: Indian
Gender: Female
Education: B.Tech from ITBHU (may become an IIT next year). Graduated in 2010 with a GPA of 7.34/10.
Planning to take some courses to improve my GPA.
GMAT: 760 (AWA 4)
Work Experience:
1) 20 months in Telecom Industry as Java Developer. The Company is leading VAS products company in India.
2) 2 months (Currently Working here) in ECommerce as Java developer in Ecommerce arm of Wal-mart.
In both jobs posted in India. I don't have any international experience.

Extracurriculars:
1) Active in Athletics. Won some medals for my college.
2) Got Professional training for Hindustani Classical music. Was an active member of the Music Club in college.
Even won one or two competitions in Music for college.
3) Played badminton in State-level Competitions during high school.
4) Part of organizing committee for college events.
5) Currently taking French Classes. May get some certification later the year.
6) Planning to get involved in community service.

Target Schools: I want to target Top 5. It would be nice if you can suggest which schools in US/Europe prefer candidates like me.

Post-MBA Career Goal: After my MBA I really want to get into Marketing and Brand Management preferably in internet business.

Frankly with your credentials, as a female applicant, you should have a strong shot at the top 5. Because you are targeting the elite schools, I would not pick and choose too much, since just due to the statistics, you will need to apply to five or six of them to be safe. You indicated brand management and marketing, so Kellogg comes to mind, and Stanford would be a good fit too given your technical background. If you plan to work in the US, these would be great choices, but if your goal is to work in Europe or Asia, you should consider schools like LBS, INSEAD and IE. The post MBA network is mostly going to have the greatest impact by staying geographically near your alma mater. The elite schools trump this to a certain extent, but again, if you want to work stateside, then a US MBA will be a better bet.

Hi,


Thanks for such a detailed and personalized reply. It would be nice if you can solve one more query of mine. I am currently working for Wal-mart which is not really considered a feeder company for these top notch colleges. So, should I switch by the time I apply next year to Google/Microsoft or will the frequent job change be detrimental to my profile? Also, I was planning to take some courses to increase GPA. Is a course in Consumer Behavior or other Marketing Courses a good choice or should I go for courses in Mathematics?

Your GMAT should be plenty of evidence for the adcoms that you can handle the academics, so I would not worry about trying to take additional courses to demonstrate this. Only if you want to take some courses to prep for b-school in which case I would take a statistics for business course or accounting. Wal mart is actually a great thing--being an international appplicant with expereince in and connections to one of the largest companies in the world is going to be an asset in your application, not a detriment. you will be competing in the application process with thousands of applicants with only fortune 1000 experience or worse, so a name like Walmart is a good thing. Definitely would not switch to google or microsoft--you already have tech in your experience--these would not be addititve to your profile.
