Dear Paul,

Could you please help me to understand my chances to enroll in Chicago, Tuck or Columbia (or it is better to try other schools)?

Nationality: Russian
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Work experience: 6 years , I worked for two international banks and telecoms company in terms of marketing and product and was a project team member in several innovative country projects, but have changed the scope of work and now work as Investment Analyst for World Bank.
GPA: close to 4, if converted to US scale, graduation with high distinction

GMAT: 670 (I have tried to improve the score 2 times but scored even lower! 650 & 600 and I may say that there was a kind of terrible Verbal section which does not match any kind of prep materials in terms of level of difficulty on the last exam which lowered my overall score, because I had 49 for math... (((

TOEFL iBT: 111

Should I retake the GMAT one more time?

I would suggest not taking the GMAT again. Can you provide the splits for your score? What was your Q raw score and V raw score?

The iBT part of the TOEFL score I don't recognize. Was it administered as a computer test?

I had Q46, V36, AWA 5.0. TOEFL iBt is a newly developed computer-based test required for all non-native speakers to apply to BSchools (there is a kind of cut-off score for TOEFL in many of them - f.e. Chicago - 106 (120 max.), Harvard - 109)

Could you please share your opinion about the reasons why GMAT re-take can be harmful?

Your Q and V scores are very close to the 80th percentile, which is sort of an informal threshold for many B-schools, so a 670 is not a bad score by any means. Given that you are Russian (not one of the common applicant pools) and work for the World Bank (distinctive + "social impact") you may have enough compensating strengths in your application to get into these schools with your existing score. Maybe. Even if other parts of your application are strong, these three schools will all be longshots for you. But by all means apply -- just make sure you have some backup schools where you're more competitive. Schools generally prefer that people only take the GMAT three times; more than that seems pointless to them. So the only reason to retake the GMAT is if since your third retake you've done a GMAT prep course and are now getting practice scores in the 700s. Then it would be worth a 4th shot.
