Some schools will give you explicit parameters, but other than that, I'd stick with a general format that is easy to read. Use a serif font (such as Times New Roman), no smaller than 10 point font (go bigger if you can), and don't crowd the page and try to make the margins zero so that you can fit more on the page. Assuming that you have at least some full-time work experience, put this first. Start with your most recent job/position at the top, and then work your way down to previous jobs. Then your education section will follow your work section, and then an "Other" section for activities and achievements outside of work. We actually have a sample of a resume in the book.
BTW, above all, keep it to one page!! So many applicants say, "But I have a lot of experience." So does everyone else. Keep it to a single page out of respect for the application readers' time.
I'd suggest doing it in Word, and then going to Adobe's web site to convert it to a PDF if needed (I think they let you do several conversions for free).
