Re: Quant Question of the Day Chat [#permalink]
Let say she chooses random number 866.
And if you multiple it 100, the ans is 86600 ( which also has 3 digits)

Good through the ques ". The answer also has three digits"

She can also choose 122, 221, 166 and many others so the answer is not unique. And hence I said that without any other information, the question doesn’t make sense

Yes, question should have option to choose the correct one.

Only with the given information you cannot confirm the correct ans

I only tried to solve as per info that ...the ans could be any 3 digits number

If 5 integers are to be selected at random and without replacement from the list consisting of the 20 integers from 1 to 20, inclusive, what is the probability that 2 of the 5 selected integers will be 10 and 20 ? A. 2/5 B. 1/4 C. 1/10 D. 1/19 E. 1/60
total probability is 20C1 and 19C1 and favourable probability is 5C1 and 4C1. so answer is 1/19

Hi,
I was practicing the gmat flashcards available on gmatclub.
gmat-flashcards-108651.html
On page 28, if you see the solution, it says sqrt(x-3)^2 is (3-x).

How is that possible

If you read the next point carefully, you will get your answer.

If each expression under the square root is greater than or equal to 0, what is \(\sqrt{x^2 - 6x + 9} + \sqrt{2 - x} + x - 3\)?

A. \(\sqrt{2 - x}\)
B. \(2x - 6 + \sqrt{2 - x}\)
C. \(\sqrt{2 - x} + x - 3\)
D. \(2x - 6 + \sqrt{x - 2}\)
E. \(x + \sqrt{x - 2}\)

Absolute Value Properties:

When \(x \le 0\), then \(|x|=-x\), or more generally, when \(\text{some expression} \le 0\), then \(|\text{some expression}| = -(\text{some expression})\).

When \(x \ge 0\), then \(|x|=x\), or more generally, when \(\text{some expression} \ge 0\), then \(|\text{some expression}| = \text{some expression}\).

Another important property to remember is \(\sqrt{x^2}=|x|\).

Back to the Original Question:

    \(\sqrt{x^2 - 6x + 9} + \sqrt{2 - x} + x - 3=\)

    \(=\sqrt{(x-3)^2}+\sqrt{2-x}+x-3=\)

    \(=|x-3|+\sqrt{2-x}+x-3\).

Now, since the expressions under the square roots are greater than or equal to zero, then \(2-x \ge 0\), which implies \(x \le 2\). Next, since \(x \le 2\), the expression \(x-3\) inside the absolute value is negative. Therefore, \(|x-3|=-(x-3)=-x+3\). This allows us to rewrite the above expression as follows:

    \(|x-3|+\sqrt{2-x}+x-3=\)

    \(=-x+3+\sqrt{2-x}+x-3=\)

    \(=\sqrt{2-x}\).

Answer: A

Hey mates, I’ve my first GMAT test Friday, and I’m really worried about one thing but I ca’t find a definitive answer. For the test (especially for the quant section), we just have the board in the computer with the test (awful design) or we have in addition a sheet and a pen??? Tell me the truth even if I’m expecting that your answer is the one that I want haha.

If you are giving the test at centre then, a booklet/sheet with 2 markers will be provided to you
