In order to find the greatest possible value of an element in a set, we need to minimize the remaining elements. Since the terms are positive and since they are distinct, the smallest values we can take for the remaining four terms are 1, 2, 3, and 4. Thus, the greatest value of the last term will be 18 - (1 + 2 + 3 + 4) = 18 - 10 = 8.

Answer: A
