Several Pentagon contractor firms are working on a new class of ventilator masks, not just for emergency and cleanup workers but to prepare for outbreaks of dangerous viruses and still another growing threat: the accidental releases of nanoparticles, which are the infinitesimal, engineered fibers that are starting to be used in electronics, food, medicine, and more.

(A) outbreaks of dangerous viruses and still another growing threat: the accidental releases of nanoparticles, which are the infinitesimal, engineered fibers
(B) outbreaks of dangerous viruses and still another growing threat: the accidental releases of nanoparticles and the infinitesimal, engineered fibers
(C) outbreaks of dangerous viruses and still another growing threat of the accidental releases of nanoparticles, the infinitesimal and engineered fibers
(D) outbreaks of dangerous viruses and for still another growing threat: the accidental releases of nanoparticles, the infinitesimal and engineered fibers
(E) outbreaks of dangerous viruses and to protect against still another growing threat of the accidental releases of nanoparticles and the infinitesimal and engineered fibers

Option D

Correct parallelism is seen.

"for outbreaks.. " should be follwed with "for still another growing threat", "the accidental releases of nanoparticles, the infinitesimal and engineered fibrers" are all found parallel.

Hope it is clear

Cheers

The answer if D because of parallelism:

==> not just for emergency and cleanup workers but to prepare for outbreaks of dangerous viruses and for still another growing threat

Need FOR here to make it //

Answer D

Official Explanation

Answer D
- In this difficult question, you must notice one very important but easy to overlook decision point: in (A), (B), and (C) you do not have the “for” before the word “still” and you must have it. In (D) you have the necessary “for” and in (E) you have “to protect”. The reason that you need the “for” in (A), (B), and (C) is that without it the sentence reads: “outbreaks of diseases and still another threat.” That means there are “outbreaks of still another threat,” which is illogical.

The sentence needs to say that you are preparing for two things: “for outbreaks of diseases and for still another growing threat:” (E) is wrong because while “to prepare” and “ to protect” are parallel, the end of the sentence is clearly wrong: “still another growing threat of the accidental releases of nanoparticles and the infinitesimal and engineered fibers.”

Separating “the infinitesimal and engineered fibers” from nanoparticles with the word “and” is wrong as they are not separate things and this structure makes it seem that “the infinitesimal” is an entity on its own. It should be used as the appositive modifier showing that the nanoparticles are “infinitesimal and engineered fibers” as you see in several of the choices. Correct answer is (D).

prepare
outbreaks of dangerous viruses
still another growing threat
the accidental releases of nanoparticles,
are the infinitesimal, engineered fibers that are starting to be used in electronics, food, medicine, and more.

Categorize them into different tiers

Prepare : outbreak

Error 1:
If for is not used before "still another growing threat", the sentence is read as below
For outbreaks of ( dangerous viruses and still another growing threat ) : the accidental releases of nanoparticles, which are the infinitesimal, engineered fibres.
Error 2:
Relative pronoun (Which) as well as noun + noun modifier is used.
Rather Noun + Noun modifier can be used. "the infinitesimal, engineered fibres".

Isn't 'for' after and in D unncecessary? Woudn't the meaning be clear even without 'for'?

....... to prepare for

1. outbreaks of dangerous viruses
and
2. still another growing threat: the accidental.....

option D ((( outbreaks of dangerous viruses and for still another growing threat: the accidental releases of nanoparticles, the infinitesimal and engineered fibers))) to be correct this part ((
the infinitesimal, engineered fibers that are starting to be used in electronics, food, medicine, and more.))
must act as an ABSOLUTE PHRASE , which is noun and noun modifiers
Isn't the presence of ""are "" makes this a clause and a run on sentence

I have the Same question. The meaning should be still clear to prepare for two things - outbreaks and still another threat.
