FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: B-Schooled Episode #11: COVID-19 Impacts

The coronavirus has upended the MBA journey for those starting programs in the fall, for those who requested but were denied deferrals, and for those who will be applying this year.

In this episode of the B-Schooled podcast, we’ll be sharing our thoughts on 5 questions related to how COVID has impacted the MBA process, including:

  • If you’re admitted to a top school but already know in-person classes won’t be the norm for a while, does it still make sense to go?
  • If you were admitted to a top school, requested a deferral, and were denied, how should you think about the choice you face now?
  • If you’re applying for the first time this coming cycle, is the competition going to be worse because there will be fewer spots next year due to COVID deferrals?
  • If you apply, is it better to apply in Round 1 or Round 2?
  • Are some schools safer bets to apply to now than others?

COVID-19 and the MBA Job Market [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: COVID-19 and the MBA Job Market

New graduates everywhere have had to adapt to a shockingly changed employment landscape in 2020. Almost immediately after the coronavirus pandemic hit, we started to see its negative impact on both the MBA job market and recruiting.

The fallout of this crisis is unprecedented. Yet, we do have experience navigating past economic crises that have affected MBA applicants and graduates. We can apply some of those lessons learned as we weather this adversity.

As in previous recessions, the job market right now is tight and competitive. Although this may feel like a disappointment, getting a job offer in the current economy is a huge win.  Even if salaries are down and offers are not first-choice. So far, jobs remain stable in healthcare, consulting, banking, many tech companies, and online companies. But, networking is going to become more critical than ever for anyone entering the post MBA job market.

To prepare for these changes, MBA graduates should remain adaptable, flexible, and resilient. Right now, simply being employed is a luxury. Graduating MBAs need to make that significant mental shift.

Make the Best of This Unique MBA Job Market
Today’s graduates need to start thinking about the career story they hope to tell in the future. Also, they should focus on the experiences and skills they can get out of whatever job/internship/unpaid project they find themselves in that will add to that career story.

Employers continue to prize skills such as adaptability, resilience, and relationship-building.  As we shared with Find MBA, this is an opportunity for grads to showcase these skills and prove they can thrive in the face of adversity.

MBAs should always focus on developing their soft skills in tandem with their hard analytical skills. After all, soft skills are vital to a capable leader. That said, now is the ideal time to hone skills that will make you particularly successful in your desired function, industry, or role.

Finally, in these uncertain times, grads need to be prepared to make career pivots.  Besides developing industry-specific skills, they must continue relationship-building in our increasingly digital world. Take comfort in the knowledge that your ability to come out of the crisis on top will impress recruiters in the future.

Why You Need a Better Evening Routine [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Why You Need a Better Evening Routine

“Fresh ideas from the Blacklight”
SBC’s Weekly Newsletter for Professionals
What does your typical evening routine look like? If you’re like many people, the hours between dinner and bedtime usually get filled up binge-watching shows on Netflix, checking work emails, and scrolling through various social media feeds.

But here’s the problem. None of that will help you wind down for healthy sleep or prepare you to slay the day tomorrow. To lay the foundation for a happier, more efficient workday, rethink the habits that make up your evening routine.

Get productive
We can hear the protests over this tip already. And we get it. At the end of the day, all you want to do is collapse on the sofa and figure out what you’re going to Postmate for dinner. But here’s something the most successful people among us have already realized. Namely, that spending time on a purposeful activity in the evening has a positive effect on our mood and behavior while at work.

“A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away.” — Phyllis McGinley

study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that when employees spent their evenings doing activities that require mastery, like playing sports, learning a new language, practicing an instrument, etc., they felt more motivated and capable at work the next day.

Set aside time each night to focus on personal development that’s unrelated to work. Those extracurricular outlets improve your overall wellbeing and can make you more productive on the job.

Plan Your Tomorrow
Countless executives consider this basic evening routine essential for success. Every night, entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis makes a quick list of the things he knows he must deal with the next day. Then, he tries to get those To-Do list items knocked out before noon. “Because from noon on, it’s kind of like the Wild, Wild West,” Lemonis says. You never know what’s going to crop up.

“If you fail to plan, plan to fail.”

Likewise, author Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame swears by the power of the nightly list. First, because it provides a clear road map of what you need to accomplish the next day. Otherwise, you can get waylaid responding to other people’s needs and demands.

Also, that nightly list forces you to schedule what you’re going to do at what time and for how long, Canfield says. Incidentally, many consider this technique, also known as timeboxing, the number-one productivity tool.

Reflect on Today
Benjamin Franklin, a model of productivity if there ever was one, incorporated this question into his evening routine: What good have I done today? You don’t need to think in terms of virtuous acts. Just write down what went well, or not so well, during the day.

This is a way of processing what you learn, recognizing moments that deserve your gratitude and acknowledging any challenges you encountered. Taking time to reflect on your day allows you to focus on areas where you can improve.

Finally, consider keeping a gratitude journal. Many studies show that feeling and expressing gratitude helps reduce stress and anxiety. As Zig Zigler said, “Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.”

If your evening routine includes taking a few minutes to write down what you’re grateful for, you go to bed with your brain trained on positive thoughts.  As a result, the mood you go to sleep in is often your mood when you wake up.

Try making these simple yet powerful tweaks to your evening routine, and see if you don’t enjoy more successful tomorrows.

Tuesday Tips: NYU Stern Essays and Tips for 2020-2021 [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: NYU Stern Essays and Tips for 2020-2021

Are you getting ready to apply to The New York University Stern School of Business? Today, we’re sharing our tips for the NYU Stern essays. The goal is to help you create a positive impression through your application materials. Stern MBA admissions says it is seeking “students who best exemplifyStern’s core value: IQ+EQ. Our admissions committee takes care to select those who demonstrate strong intellectual ability, superior interpersonal skills, and a desire to create value for business and society.”

The parameters of IQ and EQ that are important to Stern MBA are academic, professional, and personal. The admissions team will evaluate your academic ability mainly through your GMAT and GPA. However, the NYU Stern essays play a crucial part in your application strategy. In particular, they give insight into your career goals and personality.

Again this year NYU Stern asks for two EQ Endorsements with your application.

• The endorsement must be from someone who knows you personally and/or professionally and can act as a persuasive advocate of your EQ strengths.

• More details can be found here and on the NYU admissions website.

We’ve helped countless aspiring NYU Stern MBA students to put together a great application to cut through the clutter. Contact us to learn more.

NYU Stern Essays for 2020-2021
Essay 1: Professional Aspirations

(500 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

• What are your short and long-term career goals?

• How will the MBA help you achieve them?

While many people seek an MBA degree, NYU wants to invest in those who can use it most effectively. For example, maybe you’re seeking an MBA for networking or professional credibility. Or, perhaps you want an MBA to learn specific skills to change careers. Whatever your own personal reasons, make sure you can point to specific aspects of the MBA education both generally and at Stern that will help you achieve your goals.

Your post-MBA goal should be both achievable and demonstrate the need for an MBA. An MBA from NYU Stern will open professional doors for you. Therefore, you should use the NYU Stern essays to demonstrate that you are ready to take advantage of those opportunities.

To begin, think about a logical sequence that starts with your past work experience, then your MBA education, and ends with your immediate post-MBA goal. Ideally, your goal pulls from your current work experience and the skills you will gain in the NYU MBA program.

Currently, you can experience the campus through virtual events and by speaking to current students and alumni. This will help you understand why a Stern MBA is the next career step for you. Even if you are halfway around the world, you can show that you have learned about the NYU Stern experience.

Essay 2: Personal Experience (aka “Pick Six”)

Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions. Your uploaded PDF should contain all of the following elements:

• A brief introduction or overview of your “Pick Six” (no more than 3 sentences).

• Six images that help illustrate who you are.

• A one-sentence caption for each of the six images that helps explain why they were selected and are significant to you.

Note: Your visuals may include photos, infographics, drawings, or any other images that best describe you. Your document must be uploaded as a single PDF. The essay cannot be sent in physical form or be linked to a website.

A favorite American idiom says “a picture is worth a thousand words.” In this essay, you have six pictures to use. To get started, think about how you will choose the images to communicate with your future classmates and Stern MBA admissions. Think about the story you want to tell. Is it a collage of your life, or a progression? How do the pictures work together to tell the story?

While the medium can be anything, your content is the important part of this essay. The best first step is to brainstorm the information you want to convey. Think about your unique personal qualities and what your friends and family value most in you.  Next, ask yourself how would you want your classmates to see you. Finally, what information would you share with a new friend?

Building a narrative through images
Your six images may be all personal, all professional (not recommended!), demonstrate deeper meaning for you personally, or be aspirational and future-oriented. You might want to show a journey you have taken or a person who is important to you. Or you could show a vision of your future desires and plans.

Isser Gallogly, associate dean of MBA admissions, has said that this question is similar to the kind of post you might share on social media to tell your friends about your life. Images are more and more important in digital communication. This essay asks you to use images as the primary form (drawings, photos, infographics, or any other images you choose).

The one-sentence caption for each image will also be an opportunity to contextualize. If you show an image of a happy family, what does that say about your past or future? Who are the people to you? If you have an image of a place, you can use the words to explain its importance to you.

Essay 3: Additional Information (Optional)

(250 word maximum, double-spaced, 12-point font)

Please provide any additional information that you would like to bring to the attention of the Admissions Committee. This may include current or past gaps in employment, further explanation of your undergraduate record or self-reported academic transcript(s), plans to retake the GMAT, GRE, IELTS or TOEFL, or any other relevant information.

This optional essay allows you to explain anything that is not clear in your application. Maybe your academic record shows any grades of C or below in a quantitative course, or your GMAT is low. If so, you will want to explain that you are academically prepared. Any explanation should include the reasons why you will perform strongly in your academic courses at NYU.

Additionally, if you have a gap in work experience this is the place to provide context. Describe what you were doing during the gap. Take the time to explain but not excuse. Finally, remember that you never need to use the optional essay if the information in your application is straightforward on its own.

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Yale MBA Essay for 2020-2021

Is the Yale School of Management on your list of target MBA programs? Then get ready to hit the ground running. The Yale MBA essay for the 2020-2021 admissions season has been confirmed. Reapplicants should note that it remains unchanged from last year’s prompt.

Required Yale MBA Essay
Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. (500 words)

This is the fourth year that Yale SOM has asked this question. In the past, Assistant Dean for Admissions Bruce DelMonico has explained that it evolved from a conversation with Professor of Organizational Behavior Amy Wrzesniewski.  Professor Wrzesniewski noted, “Reading about future plans is helpful, but actions speak louder than words.”

“My advice on how to approach the essay is also similar to what I’ve said in past years,” DelMonico wrote in a recent blog post. “The Admissions Committee cares less about the commitment you choose and more about the behaviors surrounding the commitment.

You can choose a commitment from either your personal or work life—and each year there are many excellent essays on varied topics—but what makes them all great is that we come away learning something new about you as a person that helps us understand your values and motivations.”

DelMonico’s blog post linked above is filled with tips for using the application to tell your story. Don’t miss his advice about recommendation letters, the behavioral assessment, and more.

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: INSEAD MBA Essays for 2020-2021

The INSEAD MBA application for the September 2021 intake is now live. You’ll find the INSEAD MBA essays within the online application.  Once again, INSEAD asks applicants to answer a series of short-answer job description essays as well as motivation essays.

INSEAD MBA Essays for 2020-2021
Job Description Essays
The job questions are not essays. Hence, the number of words is not so important. People need to be comfortable writing 3 lines or 20. Some applicants work for companies that are well known and only 3 lines are sufficient to describe them; others work for small companies where it is more important to give the full picture.

Essay 1
Briefly summarise your current (or most recent) job, including the nature of work, major responsibilities, and where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, clients/products and results achieved. (200 words maximum)

Essay 2
What would be your next step in terms of position if you were to remain in the same company? (200 words maximum)

Essay 3
Please give a full description of your career since graduating from university. Describe your career path with the rationale behind your choices. (300 words maximum)

Essay 4
Discuss your short and long term career aspirations with or without an MBA from INSEAD. (100 words maximum)

Optional
If you are currently not working or if you plan to leave your current employer more than 2 months before the programme starts, please explain your activities and occupations between leaving your job and the start of the programme.

Motivation Essays
Essay 1
Give a candid description of yourself (who are you as a person), stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (maximum 500 words)

Essay 2
Describe the achievement of which you are most proud and explain why. In addition, describe a situation where you failed. How did these experiences impact your relationships with others? Comment on what you learned. (maximum 400 words)

Essay 3
Describe all types of extra-professional activities in which you have been or are still involved for a significant amount of time (clubs, sports, music, arts, politics, etc). How are you enriched by these activities? (maximum 300 words)

Optional
Is there anything else that was not covered in your application that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? (maximum 300 words)

Tuesday Tips: Booth MBA Essay Tips for 2020-2021 [#permalink]

FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: Booth MBA Essay Tips for 2020-2021

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business ranks as a top choice school for many MBA students. Chicago Booth has a tradition of intellectual inquiry, non-conformity, and innovation. Along with strong academics, Chicago will be looking for leadership and team-building skills and community involvement. This year Booth has changed the second question in this set of essays. Review our Booth MBA essay tips to strengthen your application.

Booth MBA Essay Tips for the 2020-2021 Admissions Season
This set of essays focuses on both your career goals and your personality. The second essay is about your personal interests. Also, note that Chicago is setting a word minimum for the required essay responses, while most schools set a maximum. Therefore Chicago Booth is asking for you to be thoughtful in your responses to these MBA essays and make sure you have enough space to answer the question.

Your first step is to do as much school research as possible on Chicago Booth. Attend (virtual) events. Speak to alumni. Read the admissions blog. Visit campus when it opens again. Do what you can to experience the community for yourself before starting your application. This research will be invaluable as you set pen to paper.

The Chicago MBA admissions committee can see your academic skills from your GPA/GMAT, transcripts, and other fixed data points. Also, focus on showing intellectual curiosity in the essays and the interview. You should cover your personal qualities, leadership, and career goals in these essays.

Contact Stacy Blackman Consulting for a free consultation on your MBA plans.

Essay Questions
Essay One: How will the Booth MBA help you achieve your immediate and long-term post-MBA career goals? (250 word minimum)
This career goals essay is the ideal way to describe your track record of success. You can also show that you have realistic expectations for your Booth MBA. For example, while career goals should be aspirational, they should also be possible.

Think about what you have done so far in your career. What have you learned? How can you use your past experience to inform your future goals? Then, think about how a Booth MBA can fill in any gaps. What classes will you take? Professors that can help you advance your goals? How will you engage with clubs and peers?

This question asks for both short and long-term goals, so keep your long term path in mind.

Also, the essay asks why Booth is the right place for you to pursue your MBA. Make sure to learn all you can about Booth, specifically. Thorough research into your career path and the options at Booth will allow you to answer this question fully and with conviction. With COVID-19 restrictions, it may be tough to obtain the full feeling of Booth. But virtual options like blogs and videos, and speaking with current students and alumni, can help you.

Essay Two: An MBA is as much about personal growth as it is about professional development. In addition to sharing your experience and goals in terms of career, we’d like to learn more about you outside of the office. Use this opportunity to tell us something about who you are. (250-word minimum)
Chicago Booth is looking for self-aware leaders with a sense of purpose. Therefore, Booth wants to understand your personal life. Are you someone who embraces personal growth? And what is your sense of purpose?

To focus this essay, consider using stories about your life. Have you done something in a volunteer capacity that shows who you are? Or, does your cultural background have an impact on your personality? What experiences have made an impact on you?

For example, one of our clients used a personal story about a crisis in her family to explain how she prioritizes relationships. That aspect of her personality led her to be a particularly effective leader at work and in volunteer activities.

Think about a similar story you may have. After you tell the story, reflect on the meaning. How did these experiences help you grow as a person? And, what does that tell you about your capacity for growth at Booth?

This Booth MBA essay should communicate who you are and what motivates you. Overall, your goal with both essays is to give the admissions committee a holistic sense of your potential.

Optional Essay:

Is there any unclear information in your application that needs further explanation? (300 word maximum)
This optional essay is flexible, allowing you to provide as much information as you need. Consider writing this essay if you have any areas in your profile that require further explanation. Have you had academic issues or gaps in work experience? Then this is the ideal place to add more detail.

Because the essay is open-ended, you can also use it to add any additional information. Think about what you wanted to add to your application. Perhaps you have a compelling personal story that didn’t fit in the other essays. If it helps the admissions committee understand you better, it’s worth telling. Also, you might have a strong leadership story. Or, a meaningful extracurricular to add context to your MBA application.

Reapplicant Essay:

Upon reflection, how has your perspective regarding your future, Chicago Booth, and/or getting an MBA changed since the time of your last application? (Maximum 300 words.)
This is an interesting re-applicant question. Because, instead of asking how your candidacy has improved, Booth asks how your perspective has changed. Improvements such as better test scores, a promotion or a new job would still be useful information. However, the focus is to reflect on yourself and your goals since the last time you applied to Booth.

When writing this essay, consider what has changed since your last application. For example, have you learned more about your career path, formed new relationships, or changed your career goals? Also, this is an ideal essay to demonstrate self-awareness and leadership qualities. Another essential angle is to communicate a realistic sense of how the Booth MBA fits into your future professional plans.

For more information on applying to Booth, visit the Chicago Booth admissions website.

Tuesday Tips: Berkeley Haas Application Essays, Tips for 2020-2021 [#permalink]
Expert Reply
FROM Stacy Blackman Consulting Blog: Tuesday Tips: Berkeley Haas Application Essays, Tips for 2020-2021

The Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley is a highly selective school with a small class to fill. Therefore, it’s crucial to stand out from the crowd and show how you will benefit the Haas MBA class. Above all, these tips for the Berkeley Haas application essays will help you create that positive impression.

Berkeley Haas has changed the required essays a bit this season. As a result, the second question is still about leadership, but more about your vision of leadership. Also, note that the Haas MBA admissions committee has a series of videos and tips posted on the website that can help you prepare. Ready? Let’s dive in.

SBC’s Tips for the Berkeley Haas Application Essays
Required Essay #1

What makes you feel alive when you are doing it, and why? (300 words maximum)
Haas MBA admissions has asked creative and open-ended questions for many years. This essay is a new version of that style. As a first step, brainstorm your favorite activities that are the most engaging to you.

Think about what you lose time pursuing, or find completely absorbing. This likely includes your hobbies, sports, or artistic pursuits. Another idea is an activity at work that absorbs you. Above all, the activity should reveal something personal about you. Therefore, it should go deeper than your resume and recommendations.

After you have identified a meaningful activity, then you need to describe why. The “why” is more important than the “what” because it reveals something about who you are.

For example, maybe you enjoy research projects. You like to solve problems at work. Also, to have the freedom to pursue the question where it takes you. Consider, do you enjoy research because it allows you to be creative or solve problems? Delve into your motivations to see what is driving you—being specific about “why” will help you with all of your essays.

Required Essay #2

The definition of successful leadership has evolved over the last decade and will continue to change. What do you need to develop to become a successful leader? (300 words maximum)
This essay has evolved to be more future-looking than in prior years. First, research how Haas sees leadership. Haas has a set of leadership principles. Question the Status Quo, Confidence without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself are the fundamental principles. For Haas, leadership is both inclusive and bold. Also, Haas prioritizes innovation, community, and collaboration.

Second, think about your definition of leadership. How has your definition evolved? If you had to define your leadership principles, what would they look like? For example, perhaps helping is a core part of you. And, for you, leadership means driving the development of your team.

Finally, consider how Haas will help you develop your leadership skills. It is challenging to research in person due to COVID-19. But, there are virtual options to learn more. A good starting point is to learn about specific classes, professors, clubs, and activities through blogs and class listings. Also, consider networking with former and current students virtually.

Optional Essays
We invite you to help us better understand the context of your opportunities and achievements:

1. What is the highest level of education completed by your parent(s) or guardian(s)?

Did not complete high school

High school diploma or equivalency (GED) Associate’s degree (junior college) or vocational degree/license

Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS)

Master’s degree (MA, MS)

Doctorate or professional degree (MD, JD, DDS)

2. What is the most recent occupation of your parent(s) or guardian(s)?

Unemployed

Homemaker

Laborer

Skilled worker

Professional

3. If you were raised in one of the following household types, please indicate:

Raised by a single parent

Raised by an extended family member (grandparent, aunt/uncle, niece/nephew, cousin)

Raised in a multi-generational home

Raised in foster care

4. What was the primary language spoken in your childhood home?

5. If you have you ever been responsible for providing significant and continuing financial or supervisory support for someone else, please indicate:

Child

Spouse

Sibling

Parent

Extended family member (grandparent, aunt/uncle, niece/nephew, cousin)

Other

6. Please elaborate on any of your above responses. Alternatively, you may use this opportunity to expand on other hardships or unusual life circumstances that may help us understand the context of your opportunities, achievements, and impact. (300 words maximum)

Berkeley Haas seeks diversity across many dimensions
Berkeley Haas is committed to understanding applicants completely. This question provides a chance to go deeper into your family background and your life circumstances. By doing this, the admissions committee can understand your accomplishments in context. Questions 1-5 are straight forward, and you should answer them honestly.

In Question 6, you have a choice. You can either elaborate on the information described in Questions 1-5 or add new insights. However, it should be relevant information that can help the admissions committee understand your background.

For example, you might have a highly educated family, and your parents are professionals. But, you moved to another country for college or a job. An experience like that is essential to explain how you learned a new culture or language.

Or maybe your parents are fully employed now. However, there was a period of unemployment in your family that impacted you. That information shows how you handle challenges at home.

Think about times you changed course because of your circumstances. And, think about the areas of your life that asked the most of your resilience and ability to overcome. How have you used those experiences to continue to achieve?

Optional Information #2

This section should only be used to convey relevant information not addressed elsewhere in your application. This may include explanation of employment gaps, academic aberrations, supplemental coursework, etc. You are encouraged to use bullet points where appropriate.

By the way, there is a specific place to indicate that you won’t have a recommendation from your current supervisor in the supplemental information section. Therefore, you do not need to explain that here in the optional essay.

Haas recommends using this space to address any information you could not adequately cover elsewhere. Specifically, any employment gaps or academic issues.

Otherwise, you can use one or two examples to demonstrate that you have an analytical mind. Use examples to show you take a quantitative approach to problem-solving and evaluating data. Alternatively, explain any supplemental coursework to improve your quantitative profile.

Any unexplained gap of several months between two jobs needs addressing. Therefore, if your resume has significant employment gaps, you should describe what you did between jobs. For instance, you can point to additional education, training, volunteering, or traveling during this gap.

In addition, reapplicants can describe hard improvements to your candidacy. For example, these could be an improved GMAT score, new grades from quantitative classes, or a promotion. Also, other improvements might include refined career goals and additional leadership opportunities.
