Re: average age of university presidents [#permalink]
I took a different spin on this, I chose C, however purely because 25 years ago there was no internet so conclusion is wrong. Can't compare the data points 25 yrs ago to now.

The average age of university presidents in a large sample of universities is 62. The average age of university presidents in those same universities 25 years ago was approximately eight years younger. On the basis of those data, it can be concluded that university presidents, including those at online universities, in general tend to be older now.

Which of the following casts the most doubt on the conclusion drawn above?

(A) The dates when the university presidents assumed their current positions have not been specified.
(B) No information is given concerning the average number of years that university presidents remain in office.
(C) The information is based only on universities that have been operating for at least 25 years.
(D) Information concerning the exact number of universities in the sample has not been given.
(E) None of the answers provided cast doubt on the conclusion drawn above.

Do we get option e) type of option as well. None of the above? I have never seen this kind of option in OG or gmatprep.

can't understand why "c" is the correct answer......for this weaken question.... "C" could have been an answer for a flaw question where it could be said that since the CONCLUSION pertains to all universities.... the premise should also have represented all, rather than only those universities which are at least 25 years old....inthat case "C" would have been the right answer.....

(C) The information is based only on universities that have been operating for at least 25 years.

A weaken answer could have been...." universities that have been operating for at least 25 years comprise only 10 % of all universities..".

This question is indeed very similar to the one about the CEO's and answer is of course C because we can't generalize based on a sample of universities that have only been operating for the last 25 years

Hope its clear
Cheers

--- in general tend to be older now---
We see this phrase ---> we have to talk about universities in general ---> C

Re: The average age of university presidents in a large sample [#permalink]
Statement 1 : average age of university presidents in a large sample of universities is 62.
Statement 2 : average age of university presidents in THOSE SAME universities 25 years ago was eight years younger
Statement 3 : It can be concluded that university presidents, including those at online universities, in general tend to be older now.

Watch out for statement 2 for words used THOSE SAME : what about other universities??

Things are generalized taking a only a sample. Hence, we need a choice , which points this out, that is C.
