(B) that everyone for his sins in eternal damnation will burn - distorts the intended meaning, not for sins in eternal damnation, but rather burn in eternal damnation
(C) that everyone will burn in eternal damnation for his sins - Correct
(D) about everyone that they will burn in eternal damnation for their sins - who are THEY
(E) that all of us should burn in eternal damnation for their sins - again THEIR doesn't have an antedecent + the answer choice distorts the original meaning

Hi There,

My question is regarding 'their' in option A Vs. 'his' in option C. According to me if we want to refer to everyone, we must ideally use 'his or her' as we are referring to both genders?

Any insights on how C is correct would be great.

EVERYONE is SINGULAR, so singular pronoun must be used rather than using plural pronoun "THEIR"
Options A,D & E are out.
In option B, Placement of "in eternal damnation" distorts the original intent.
Thus option C is CORRECT.

All options are wrong.. "SAID that everyone WOULD"..... (future within a past statement must take conditional "would".

A - parallelism between everyone and their.
B- sins in eternal damnation isn't right
C- everyone and his doesn't click
D- about everyone that- not correct

If C is the answer, it should ideally have 'his or her sins' instead of his . His sounds awkward to me. Any thoughts?

A seems to be correct ..
"His" seems to point preacher ..that is illogical ..

I am not sure, but I don't think that the usage of "his or her" is a grammar issue, it is just a new trend that people use "his or her". The use of "his" is absolutely okay and if you look at the written materials that are several years old or even older, you will notice that "his" is used in 90% of the cases.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for your discussions. Here is the official explanation for this question.

The correct answer is (C). Everyone is always singular. Therefore, any pronoun that refers to everyone must also be singular. Choices (A) and (D) use their (plural) instead of his (singular) to refer to everyone and are therefore wrong. Choice (B) uses his correctly but places its prepositional phrase modifiers awkwardly. Choice (E) uses their correctly to refer to “all of us” (plural all because of us, which is plural), but changes the meaning of the sentence to “should burn” instead of “will burn.”

What's the source of this question?
And I agree everyone is singular but it should use his or her instead of just his. His refers to everyone in speech as far as I know.

There is no mistake in the usage of "his" in this particular case. Of course, according to new trends it should be "his or her" as "his or her" is a gender neutral, but this has never been a grammatical mistake. Whenever you cannot identify the sex of the person, you can use "his" and that would be grammatically correct.

The sentence is flawed as it is indirect speech and it should have followed indirect speech rules nevertheless it would be worthwhile to discuss the split here .
Everyone is singular and takes singular verb for eg everyone has to do the homework.
