Re: What is the length of the diagonal of rectangle ABCD? [#permalink]
What is the length of the diagonal ?

d^2 = a^2 + b^2 ; a and b being the sides of the rectangle

(1) perimeter = 16 = 2a + 2b = 2 (a+b)
So a+b = 8
Not sufficient to find a^2 + b^2

(2) area = 16 = ab
Not sufficient a^2 + b^2

(combined)
1 : ab=16
2 : a+b=8

From 2 (a+b)^2 = 8^2 = 64
=> a^2 + b^2 + 2ab = 64
=> a^2 + b^2 = 64 - 2ab
=> a^2 + b^2 = 64 - 2*16 (from 1)
=>a^2 + b^2 = 64 - 32 = 32

Sufficient, answer choice C
