The argument claims that a foreign company importing copies of motorcycle X has been unsuccesful to attract motorcyle X customers due to some other reason than the commonly held belief pertaining to a difference in noise generated by the motorcycles. The argument uses the fact that foreign cars, although queiter than American ones, sell well and that TV advertisements for motorcycle X do not feature its noise output as evidence against this belief. Stated in in this way the argument reveals examples of leap of faith, and fails to mention several key factors, on the basis of which it could be evaluated. The conclusion of the argument relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence. Hence the argument is unconvincing and remains open to debate.

Firstly, the argument assumes that customers of motorcycles and cars value the same characterisitcs. The argument uses the analogy that equal sales of foreign cars and American made cars, even though they differ in noise output, should equate to the sales of motorcycle X and its foreign counterpart being equal as well. This analogy is a stretch as it assumes that noise is a factor which would discourage a car customer from purchasing a certain vehicle, and therefore that the same can be said about motorcylce customers. This argument could have been much clearer if the comparison was made to other US made motorcylces which produced differing noise levels.

Secondly, the argument points to the lack of highlighting of motorcylce X's noise output in its television advertising. This is again a very weak and unsupported claim as television advertising is only one of the many potential advertising streams available. As motorcycle X has been in production for over 70 years, it can be assumed that the exceptionally loud noise it makes is well know by generations of motorcycle X's customers and admirers. Furthermore, the arguement does not specify through what means of advertising motorcycle X customers predominantly come.

Finally, the argument does not allude to any other differences between the two supposedly similar motorcylces. Is the quality of the same standards? Are parts and servicing equally affordable and available? Are the safety ratings comparable? Without answers to at least some of these questions, one is left with the impression that the claim is more of a wishful thinking rather than substansive evidence.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strenghtened if the author mentioned all the reevant facts pertaining to the differences in the motorcycles and the likes and dislikes of specifically the motorcylce customer base rather than general vechile customer bases. Without this information, the argument remains unsubstatiated and open to debate.

HEY..
U have written on correct logic. However, the content of your paragraph seems redundant and huge.
It would be better if you make it a bit concise and to the point.
Avoid long sentences too. Too long statements confuse the reader leading to the reader going off track.
Thanks.

hello, I have also written a response here it is:
The argument above argues that the failure of motorcycle X copy to attract the original motorcycle customers is not because of the copy's lack of exceptionally loud noise that is on the original. The argument presents reasons that are poor and dismisses the opinion of the customers without showing the reason, it also does not provide any alternative clear reason.

To elaborate, first, the argument compares motorcycle companies to car companies despite them not being the same, without showing evidence of the similarities between the companies. Furthermore, motorcycles are desired to have loud noise, while if cars made noises it would indicate that they are broken which explains why foreign car companies sell. Thus this reason is unnecessary and should not be mentioned.

Secondly, the argument assumes that motorcycle X ads were noisy with voice-overs or rock music highlighting durability instead of sound making. This argument would be true if motorcycles were ordered from the ads without actually seeing the motorcycle as most customers would buy it from a shop and not a tv ad. Similarly, they needed to mention that most motorcycle X customers buy it straight from ads without trying it first in the shop.
finally, the argument mentions that there must be another explanation for the failure of the foreign company without elaborating on it. If they had mentioned other examples of failure, for example, engine failure, or poor customer service, this argument would be stronger.

In summary, this argument does not support its claims with real evidence and relays on speculations. If it had mentioned more reasonable evidence it would be stronger.

Re: Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 ye [#permalink]
Hi Sajjad1994, Please review my essay. Thanks in advance.

The argument claims that Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the US for over 70 years, and has a good market presence. The foreign company that copied the design of motorcycle X, despite selling it for less price, it is unable to capture the customer segment of Motorcycle X. The reason stated by the general opinion is that the product lacks loud noise which is prevalent in Motorcycle X. The author refutes this reason by stating that there has to be another reason for the same as foreign cars that make less noise are sold and the motorcycle X brand doesn't promote loud noise as its USP in the commercial. This argument reveals examples of leap faith and poor reasoning as it fails to mention several key factors, on basis of which this argument could be evaluated. The conclusion of the argument is based on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence. Hence the argument is weak and has several flaws.

First, the argument readily assumes that since the foreign car brands which make less noise are preferred over the US cars which make a loud noise, the same is applicable for Motorcycle X and the foreign motorcycle. This statement is a stretch because the customer segment and preference can be completely different for both cars and motorcycles. For example, the customer segment who prefers cars can be elite or customers who have a family whereas, the customers who prefer motorcycles can be youngsters who prefer loud noise and seek that road attention while driving. This argument could have been much clearer if it explicitly stated the customer base and example preferences of each customer segment.

Second, the argument claims that the ad/commercial of motorcycle X doesn't claim loud noise as its unique selling point but only mentions its durability and sleekness. The very reason for not promoting the loud noise can be that the brand wants to be open to all customer segments and made a generic commercial covering the mandatory USP whereas loud noise can be specific to one customer segment like youth. Even though it might have a huge customer base of youth, it wants to be open to attract other customer segments apart from youth as well, who might find loud noise a drawback. This is again a very weak and unsupported claim as the argument does not demonstrate any correlation between the commercial not mentioning loud noise and that directly affecting the reason the general public has stated could be the drawback for foreign brand motorcycle.

Finally, the soul reason can also be the brand name, and the public generally when they compare the features of both the brand might check the design credibility and also prefer Motorcycle X over the foreign brand for the sole reason of over years of market presence and all its USP's are tried and tested and service is ensured. The loud noise might be considered as a uniqueness and they might be willing to pay extra solely for that. One specific reason for the general public cant be taken into consideration but similarly the author cant neglect that loud noise can also be a key factor. Without convincing answers to these questions, one is left with the impression that the claim is more of wishful thinking rather than substantive evidence.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above-mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It would be considerably strengthened if the author addressed the above-mentioned gaps with relevant facts. To access the merits of a certain argument it is essential to have full knowledge. Without these information, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.

Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 ye [#permalink]
Hi, could you please review my essay? Thanks in advance :)

The writer argues about the explanations that could lie behind the less attractiveness that the American Motorcycle X’s copy has had in a foreign country. Some say that the explanation relies on the product’s lack of a loud noise which is typical of the original motorcycle. Despite this, the author provides other explanations. Firstly, it’s discussed the fact that both foreign and American quiet cars sell well. Secondly it reports that in ads the noise made by Motorcycle X is not highlighted and often covered.

The writer provides makes one big first assumption, that is the comparability between the cars market to the one of motorcycle. Making profit in a specific segment of market of a country is not a data that one can easily correlate to the profits made in a similar market. Profits made in the two fragments that are part of the same category (which are vehicles) could be totally different from each other.

Another assumption suggested is that by covering in ads the noise made by Motorcycle X, the clarification about the less attractiveness could be hardly based on the lack of noise. However, choices made in ads’ field don’t have to be forcibly correlated to the most evident characteristic of a product. For example, management could have decided to put in the foreground other qualities of the product which are often forgotten. Another reason might be the fact that the exceptional heavy noise could provoke a disturbance in the viewer of the ad.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above-mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly provided data or numbers within the argument. Otherwise, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.

The argument claims that the copy of Motorcycle X is unable to attract the customers of Motorcycle X for some other reason than the quiet nature of its engine compared to the exceptionally loud roar of the original Motorcycle X. The argument has also provided some supporting evidences to back this claim. For example, foreign-made cars sell at least as well as US-made cars despite being quieter than the US ones, and also that advertisements of Motorcycle X focus on its durability and sleekness rather than the loud sound of the engine. However, this argument has certain flaws that, if not corrected, could weaken the claim of the author.

First, it is said that loudness of the original Motorcycle's engine cannot be the reason for its attractiveness. This claim is supported by giving reference to the advertisement of the Motorcycle X which highlights its durability rather than the loudness of the engine. However, this argument doesn't take the customers' perspective in consideration. May be if we go out in the market and ask the customers what they like the most about Motorcycle X, a majority of them might respond by highlighting the loudness of the engine. So, the author would be in a better position if he put some hard data across by interviewing the customers.

Second, the argument wrongly compares the target market of cars and bikes. As can be observed, bikes are more popular among the young population who likes to go on road trips on their bikes, and cars are preferred by the people who have families and likes going out with entire family rather than going alone. So, it makes much more sense for some family man to buy a cheaper and quieter foreign made car to keep his finances in check. Therefore, the author has to study the market deeper to understand which age group is buying motorcycles and which is buying cars before coming to any conclusion.

Third, as the argument mentions that Motorcycle X has a legacy of 70 years. Therefore, nostalgia could be another factor behind people preferring Motorcycle X over its cheaper foreign-made copy. For example, there could be multiple Chinese-made cheaper versions of Apple iPhones that look almost exactly the same but people still prefer buying an iPhone because of the brand is associated with the legendary Steve Jobs and because of social validation which comes with the ownership of a flagship brand.

In conclusion, while at first, it makes sense to assume that people are not going for a foreign-made copy of Motorcycle X because it might not be as durable and sleek as original one. But, only a closer study of the other scenarios mentioned above could give a better picture into the actual reasons behind the popularity of the original Motorcycle X.

Re: Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 ye [#permalink]
Hi! It would be great if my essay could be reviewed.

The argument claims the lack of sales for the foreign company selling motorcycles similar to Motorcycle X cannot be attributed to the lack of noise in the foreign version. Stated in this way the argument manipulates facts and conveys a distorted view of the situation. It fails to mention the several key factors based on which this claim can be evaluated and reveals examples of leap of faith and poor reasoning.

First, the argument readily assumes that since foreign cars sell, despite being quieter, at least as well as other American-made cars, noise cannot be a factor in the lesser sales for the motorcycles. This claim rests on the hypothesis that just because something happened in one case, it is likely to happen in this case too. It becomes a logical stretch since the demographic that motorcycles and cars cater to might be different. For example, the customers that drive cars may like them to be quieter but the customers riding the bikes may like the noise. Hence, we cannot conclude with surety that noise not being a factor in car sales also means that it is not a factor in motorcycle sales.

Second, the argument claims that since noise is not highlighted as a selling proposition in the television advertisements for motorcycle x, it cannot be the reason for lesser sales of the foreign version of Motorcycle X. This is a severely unsubstantiated claim because it does not consider the possibility that consumer sentiment may differ from company belief. For example, it is highly probable that the company believes the sales and popularity of Motorcycle X exist due to its durability and sleekness, but the customers prefer to buy it because of the noise it produces. Unless the argument provides strong evidence suggesting correlation between customer sentiment and selling propositions on advertisements, it is unwise to deem that noise not being a highlight on the television advertisement means it cannot be a reason for sale.

Finally, this argument should answer questions like: Do consumers of foreign made cars and Motorcycle X have the same preferences? Are same factors considered while buying cars and motorcycles? Is consumer sentiment mirrored in the advertisements on television? In the absence of convincing answers to the questions, one is left with the impression that the conclusion in a leap of faith.

In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above-mentioned reasoning and is therefore not convincing. It would be considerably stronger had information been provided for demographics of car and motorcycle x consumers, and evidence been given for any kind of association between consumer sentimentality and advertisements.
