Dinged! w/o interview!
Submitted end of August, ED

3.1 GPA Engineering State School
700 GMAT, 44V, 42Q, AWA 6.0
39 months WE at matriculation (IT at Fortune 500)
Solid essays (in my opinion), wrote about bkgrnd in IT and Engineering (and trends that I have observed) and desire to leverage previous WE to work in MC -- all essays proof-read by alumni
average community service (nothing crazy)
Asian-American

What do you guys think? Is it the low WE? I am also considering taking a calculus class to address my low Quant Score.. do you think that the quant score is of concern?

Dissapointed.. but there is always next year!

Thanks everyone!

things that stick out, your Q score is LOW..

you probably need to personalize your essays more..maybe not talk much about work..maybe something personal??

hm a calculus class? how will that help? weren't you an engineering major? You must have taken a few calculus classes I'd imagine.

So a likely bit of overanalysis here.

I'm about done with my Columbia essays. Considering Columbia's sensitivity for being a "backup" school for Harvard, Wharton and arguably Sloan, do you think they'd raise an eye at all for RD apps that are conveniently submitted a few weeks after the above schools' deadlines. I feel it would just scream 'now that I got the big ones out of the way, I can finish up Columbia'.

Should I wait til late November'ish to submit? Still well before the RD review period, but I'd kinda just like to be done with this....

Yes, I have taken through calc 4 but got B's in all of them. I was hoping that by taking a calculus class and receiving an "A" would help alleviate concerns regarding my quant abilities. Good idea?

also re your situation palmetto i assume the calculus class you'd be retaking would be at some community college...which if only to go from B to A in calculus seems at least to me like something that wouldn't take you from dinged w/o interview to accepted at Columbia. They have many people there who got B's in Calculus. Much less with 42's on the quant part of the GMAT. Your money would be much better spent hiking up your quant GMAT score. just my $0.02.

Sorry to hear about being dinged. I would focus on more leadership within your community.

Instead of taking a semester-long course, why not study for the GMAT for a month or two and then retake the exam?

The fact that you're RD probably alerts them enough to the fact that Columbia may not be your #1 choice. And frankly, they're ok with that, otherwise they would only admit ED. I would submit as soon as your application is at its best, irrespective of other schools' deadlines.

Reading your post makes me a little sad. I am also an Asian American (male), and went to a Eng. state school. I am shooting for a similar GMAT score as well. I do not think retaking a calculus class will help much. I think taking a course along the lines of MC would be more beneficial, since then you could write how your interest in MC is more solid due to taking a course.

Also, I am not sure if you tailored your essays toward how and why MC is of interest to you, and how your efforts WE wise support on why Columbia's MC degree will help you reach your career goals.

Freedom Angel I think you are a bit too young. I would not worry about the GMAT, use the next couple of years to get some really interesting work experience.
